What To Do When You Don't Have A Head Coach In Mid July?

Featured Replies

Essentially a month before the first games of the season begin being played, and Newport is still on the hunt for a new head coach. Webster County has also opened up this week after their head coach accepted an administrative position.

When something like that happens to your team, do you even have a prayer at pulling out a decent season?

As a school administrator, what do you do with your team at this point?

Any opinions on what we'll see out of Newport and Webster?

Fire the athletic director and/or principal?

Our Coach quit 9 days before the first game a few years ago.

Interim coach then went 14-1 losing in the final.

Call and offer me $60K.

In all seriousness, its a tough spot to be in. Hope they find someone who will do well for their program.

This isn't like Second Grade Soccer where you just get a dad off the sidelines and put your best kids up front and hope for the best. The head coach for HS does SO much more. I understand Webster County returns alot of starters from last year (granted I think they were 1 and 10 I think). I really feel for those kids. Who knows it may be a rallying cry to pull together. Has happened before. Webster's district is crazy tough (Mayfield, Murray and Ballard Memorial - all good), but the rest of the schedule offers hope anyway. I don't know enough about Newport to know about their potential.

Promote from within if anyone is qualified or try and lure an experienced person out of retirement are probably your best bets.

If you can't name a qualified interim coach, then I say you end up probably having to scramble and overpay someone.

And I would say that the smartest hire would be someone who has a similar scheme to what was being run. Be kind of hard to transition from air raid to power I in a month.

You feel for the kids, because they have no control over how this plays out. Hopefully someone at Newport has been at least successfully running things over the summer.

You have to promote an assistant coach that the kids know and love. Get the support of the families and the people of the community.

Heard yesterday that Newport has a coach but it has not been announced just yet.

Did they just hire a new principal as well?

There has been a new one from what I hear and he's planning on running the triple option.

That will not go well. You don't just start running the triple option on July 15th.

You need an athletic quarterback with a high football IQ and AT LEAST two legit athletes.

I love the offense though. Combination of hide the ball and breaking ankles.

I'm curious as to what you mean by this. Outside of maybe 3 or 4 programs in this state (none of which would have this kind of issue this late), what a head coach is paid is set in stone by the local school board.

I'd be very interested to know if there are high schools out there willing to go above and beyond the published pay-rate to acquire a coach at any time of year (again, outside those 3 or 4 programs I'm sure would 'find a way' to get who they want).

COULD BE that you mean they hire an UNDER-QUALIFIED person, thus the published pay-rate is more than they're worth.

That very well may be what they have to do unfortunately. Unless they can get lucky and do long was mentioned above, find a retired coach and ask him to take the reigns for one year.
