April 1, 201511 yr According to UConn's women coach Geno Auriemma. Below is the link to the story and interview. Geno Auriemma: Men's basketball game is 'a joke'
April 1, 201511 yr There's some truth to what he says. I don't watch as much as I used to. I used to watch just about any game on, now I only watch it it's a team I like. The game has shifted to far to the physical side. It's too much like football. It's supposed to be a balance of finess and physical, there's to much physical and not enough finess. I'd like to see it shift back the other way.
April 1, 201511 yr While I agree on many of his points he's the last person that should say that. He's the face of the women's game which is an even bigger joke. How many times has he been undefeated? How many teams in women's basketball can realistically win the title in any one given year?

He said womens' hoops is behind the times too. He was asked a question and gave an honest answer...and he is mostly correct. He also knows more about basketball than 99% of the people on the planet so I think he is a great person to discuss it.

If you remove that one team, women's basketball suddenly would be very competitive. Dude just has the women's game on lock down right now.
April 2, 201511 yr The philosophy of many teams seems to be foul every possession, because the refs just won't blow the whistle every possession and after a while you get basketball that resembles what the Knicks were doing under Riley.

Because the product he coaches is one of the most boring sports on the planet and the fact he has never coached a men's team at a high level he should stay quiet. Women and Men's basketball are different games period.
April 2, 201511 yr He is 110% correct. He even reiterated today on ESPN and said even the women's game is horrible. The men's game is filled with dunks and 3 point shots and no movement on offense and thatnismwhat he said today and he is correct. There aren't shooters anymore because they don't need to be. He said outside the top 10 trams the game is horrible. You hardly see scores in the 80's because nobody can shoot.
April 2, 201511 yr You can look at UC and see what they were. They were a pretty good team in the scheme of things and could not score. And you can say well they don't recruit shooters. Well the few shooters there are go to the top programs and the rest go D2 because they can't get off a shot against D1 defenses that can bang them all over.

UC's scoring problems were turnover and tempo related far more than they were shooting. It was the best 2 point FG% team in the Cronin era and the three primary guards were solid from the perimeter...
April 2, 201511 yr I feel it has been like this for quite a while. It is pretty much unwatchable to me until the tourney. I am not so sure it is they can't score, it is that the physical aspect of play doesn't allow it. The game at the highest collegiate level has way too many stops in play. It has to be tough to officiate. Size and bulk is more of an advantage over the long haul of a season than ever before. These guys are crazy good athletes and could probably score at will if it wasn't physical. I still don't know what is best, though. This or a glorified all-star game where teams score 90-110 points with no defense.

There would be very few qualified to speak on the subject and none of them have BGP memberships, I bet.

This or a glorified all-star game where teams score 90-110 points with no defense. We saw a good example of this in the Kentucky game against NDU. Auguste with 3 and 4 fouls was unable to body up against Towns and he was able to score unmolested as a result.
April 2, 201511 yr The game is to physical! I was a head coach in high school and had to adjust how i coached because of how physical the game became. When i first started coaching, we ran the flex or other pattern offenses. The last couple years i coached you couldn't run pattern offenses because players could not cut without getting knocked off their cut or it would take them to long to get where they were going. The ballhandler couldn't wait and would end up lowering their head and driving to the basket because his defender was all over him while he was waiting on the cutter. BAD BASKETBALL.
