Men's College Basketball Game is a "Joke"

Featured Replies

The game is to physical! I was a head coach in high school and had to adjust how i coached because of how physical the game became. When i first started coaching, we ran the flex or other pattern offenses. The last couple years i coached you couldn't run pattern offenses because players could not cut without getting knocked off their cut or it would take them to long to get where they were going. The ballhandler couldn't wait and would end up lowering their head and driving to the basket because his defender was all over him while he was waiting on the cutter. BAD BASKETBALL.

That is how it is today. Good description

If you remove that one team, women's basketball suddenly would be very competitive. Dude just has the women's game on lock down right now.

Exactly. How can he complain about the men's game when the game that butters his bread has been totally one-sided and anti-climatic since Pat Summit left the game. Granted he said the women's game is a joke too but pot meet kettle in this case.

Why is he the "last person" who should say this? He said womens' hoops is behind the times too. He was asked a question and gave an honest answer...and he is mostly correct. He also knows more about basketball than 99% of the people on the planet so I think he is a great person to discuss it.

Because this is akin to Obama coming out and saying democrats are stupid. At the same time, he likely is the most qualified to say that men's college basketball is a joke seeing as how he made his money in women's college basketball. Which is a joke.

It really is pretty simple.

Why does the college game look so much different than the NBA game? Maybe because roughly 1% of the guys in D1 will ever see one second on the floor in the NBA.

With that said, the only fix is forcing the "freedom of movement" changes that were pushed at the start of last season. Offense in the college game looks ugly because the coaches refuse to give up the ability to bump and grab at every opportunity.

The college game is a blood bath around the rim. If you can't run a clean offense, and when you do you aren't afforded a clean whistle on the finish there are no other rules that matter.

Silly crap like shortening the clock and moving the charge circle out are slapping lipstick on a pig.

If the rules don't allow running clean offense, guess what is the end result???

The philosophy of many teams seems to be foul every possession, because the refs just won't blow the whistle every possession and after a while you get basketball that resembles what the Knicks were doing under Riley.

Really I blame the Pistons of the late 80's for bringing the physical play into the sport.

So just because he has the best team he isn't allowed to comment on anything basketball related or anything outside of his team? That's pretty silly.

Is the game too physical, yes. But really where did most kids learn how to play, on the street where hardly any fouls are called. The fact is that most kids are used to playing like that now and practice taking a hit and finishing at the rim. Shooting and passing skills take too much time. You have to practice those skills, not just play games. Baseball is also changed where even the pros have little fundamentals. It takes too much time and money to push them through the system.

You can see how much the game has changed, and I feel it is because of how physical it has gotten, by just one thing.

In the past during the NCAA tourney the team that would more times than not win it all would be a team that had one of the best PG's in the game. It hasn't been that way in a few years now because no longer do offenses depend on movement as much as simply banging it inside.

Anymore when a player takes a 18-19 foot jumper people question why he didn't just take a step back so it would be a 3. I personally wish they did away with the 3 point line. My favorite shot growing up was the 15 foot jump shot, you are lucky if you see 2 a game anymore.

While I agree on many of his points he's the last person that should say that. He's the face of the women's game which is an even bigger joke. How many times has he been undefeated? How many teams in women's basketball can realistically win the title in any one given year?

This x1000.

I don't understand the thinking that because he is a succesful coach in womens basketball that he isn't allowed to have an opinion.

Makes zero sense.

That is like saying the president of the united states isn't allowed to have an opinion on Putin because he is from the greatest nation on earth.

Can someone explain to me how many times he went undefeated has anything to do with how bad the college game is today?

Some of you all actually sound pretty sexist and chauvinistic if you ask me.

Women's Basketball, on ALL levels, is the biggest joke in sports. It's not close. He's made a living on that joke, and he's pointing fingers at another sport? Of course MBB has it's flaws, but for someone who has raked in all the glory of being "The Man" in a "worse" sport to cast stones at another is laughable.

Because the women's game is broke more than the mens. It's possibly the least competitive sport in America.

HE also said the womens game is bad.

What I don't understand is why isn't he allowed to have an opinion and who is to say you are allowed to have an opinion on the matter? What do you know about the game that he doesn't? I'm not pointing you out in particular, just making a point.

No one that is a member of this board has any more right than he does to make a comment on the game, as a matter of fact he has more of a right if you ask me because he has forgotten more about the game than anyone on here has ever known.

To say he shouldn't be making a comment on the subject and then any of you all commenting on the subject eeks of hypocrisy.

I'd argue kids these days are playing LESS street ball than in the past. AAU, travel teams, heck kids play organized ball almost year round. No time to play street ball, and with playing so many games, I'd say the last thing kids want to do is play street ball in their free time.

For a game that is "a joke" there's certainly alot of money being made. Every sports bar will be packed this week-end watching this joke sport.
