I grew up in Pike County, but have been gone from there for nearly 20 years. When I was there, you could attend any school in the county (IF) you provided your own transportation if it was outside of your designated area in the county. Anyone in the county could attend Pikeville Independent if they wanted, but it cost you if you lived outside of the city limits. I couldn't however drive to Floyd County to go to one of their schools since I didn't live in that county, not sure how it has changed now.

 

I currently live in Fayette County. I can send my kids to the attendance area school that we have for Elementary,Middle, & High School & if they qualify for a program @ another school they can attend there.

 

Counties make certain concessions if someone who is a junior or senior has a situation (family moves to neighboring county & they want to finish their high school time @ the school they were at) but then again it reverts back to providing your own transportation & such(they have also asked for tuition to finish it out since you are in another county paying that countys taxes & not for the county you are attending)

 

I dont know each counties rules, I can say that Bourbon County has an open enrollment system the last I checked, there were some students I know who were living in Fayette County & attending Bourbon County & were playing athletics, (they had never played Varsity in Fayette however)

 

I'm just saying I have seen a lot in my nearly 20 years of involvement in athletics in this state, and I am not saying I am right, wrong or in the middle & definitely not trying to offend anyone. I do like this forum.

 

The point you are making is that different school systems make up different rules. In short, some of these schools systems add these restrictions and then play dumb adding to the confusion.

 

All anyone ever needs to know is this, by KHSAA rule your school can take any student they want to take, if they tell you anything else they are a liar.

And to further cloud the issue there are public schools in KY that take students that live in other states.

Guru, I am not familiar with NKy @ all honestly. Do you know of a lot of kids attending schools out of county up there? Here in Fayette County, I cant think of any off the top of my head who does? Talk spreads fast down here, same as it does anywhere else, if a kid is out of county it gets out quick. FCPS does have an attendance area policy though, does Kenton, Boone, Campbell & Grant Counties or do they allow flexibility?

You nailed it, the Fayette County Public Schools have an attendance area policy. In other words, FCPS put an additional restriction on themselves and it was their choice to do that.

 

There are others on BGP that know more about this than me but in short Boone County is a closed system, you go to school based on where you live and Kenton County is an open system allowing kids to choose which Kenton County school they go to.

 

Furthermore, schools like CovCath, Beechwood, Highlands, and NCC will take kids from anywhere. With schools like Beechwood and Highlands (Independent but still Public) they will take kids from anywhere if they have the space and the kid is smart enough.

He said the new high school they're building in Bentonville will split the school district in half.

As mentioned in my first post, the new coach would get a full year with Bentonville HS full allotment of kids, before the new high school (Bentonville West) is open in the Fall of 2016, thereby diluting the talent pool. I believe the existing school will retain the majority of the talent though.

 

People here in Arkansas always point to the Springdale High School example though. Springdale High, south of Bentonville about 10 miles, with current Auburn HC Gus Malzahn, then as the head coach won the state title in 2005 with some great talent including Parade and Gatorade Player of the year, QB Mitch Mustain (Arkansas and USC).

 

A second high school opened (Har Ber) the next year and Springdale football has never been the same, with the 7a Division being dominated by Bentonville and nearby Fayetteville who together have won 7 of the 9 state titles since. Har Ber actually won a title in 2009 to further salt the wound.

 

So it's a data point that every incoming candidate had to consider when they applied. I don't think it's as big a deal, but the next 10 years could prove me wrong too.

No. The district zones, even at the elementary, middle, and Jr. high schools have been a sore point for years. They had to redraw them nearly every year over the last eight because of the growth and new schools being built. The high school was the constant because there was only one.

 

My guess is that there will be some leniency in the first three years with kids who started at BHS and have the desire to finish there (grandfather clause), but after that, it'll be pretty strict.

So if it splits the school in half, obviously they won't stay 7A, correct? What class will it move them down to? And if they retain most of the talent with a drop in class, it only seems to make sense that they could very well dominate a lower class division as well, correct? Maybe even more so than they do in 7A currently. Heck, when you look at it from that angle, it could very well be a "win win".
