No Helmets till July 22

Featured Replies

I thought the rule was that the KHSAA insurance wouldn't cover 7 on 7? I probably have no idea what I am talking about but if this is a rule this is stupid. Plain stupid.

No football practice should be held WITHOUT helmets IMHO. I have seen teams participate in 7 on 7 with one team in helmets and one without. That is just crazy. Wearing helmets is vital to preventing concussions.

This is just blasphemy if true. The sport has already lost LOTS of respect because of the soft rules and worries and concerns about little Johnny breaking a pinky. It is and always will be a VIOLENT sport. If you are afraid of little Johnny getting hurt then don't let him play. It's amazing what this generation has become.

So this means McCracken County has to wait until July 18th to go full pads this year?

:D

Well done.

Who respects it less?

I was told today that this IS true. Beyond that, I would rather not comment.

When is the restrictions going to end on football. Now, many will say all high school sports have similar restrictions. I say bull crap. Basketball fans/coaches will say they have restrictions, but they say it with one side of their mouth and with the other side they know their players will be playing the entire off-season with a coach they tutor to coach virtually their entire team to prepare them for the high school season. Baseball fans/coaches will say the same thing knowing their players will be playing summer ball and fall ball while working with private coaches in the fall to prepare for the high school season.

Football lost the entire month of June so basketball could practice with their entire team, with the stipulation July was for football, with basketball coaches knowing most of their players would be playing AAU in July anyway. The first part of July is lost for football to the dead period, now the next week is lost too because you can't wear helmets, so 7 on 7 should be out for that additional week. As soon as the practice window is open coaches are going to dedicate every minute to football practice and not worry about 7 on 7 anymore. Then coaches will try to get as much practice in as possible so they are prepared to start the season.

Players don't have AAU football or club football to hone their skill, they have to rely on what time they have with their high school team unlike all other sports. If preventing injury and heat related illness is a true concern, they need to let the players properly prepare for the sport's season ahead of them, don't rush them into playing without proper acclimation and preparation.

Kentucky football coaches association needs to stop handing olive branches to basketball.

Talk to coaches in other states and they laughed.

Pretty Embarrasing if you ask me, but hey adjust and go on. We already can't compete in national 7 on 7 tourneys in June and now you can kiss July good bye.

Personally, the KHSAA has been a leader in making football a safer sport. I'm sure they had their reasons if this is true. Football is violent and at the end of the day it will always be violent, but that doesn't mean we can't have rules to limit injury, death, etc.

BBN baby, that is the reason why!! This state and not others. It makes no sense for a player to be involved in 7 on 7 or any other drill with out the most protective piece of equipment they wear, A HELMET!! I just don't understand why we keep adding more and more restrictions to football, and who is voting on this? Are coaches being polled about what they think, maybe a select few, but for the majority, the coaches in this state are getting tired of the misrepresentation that is taking place. What about camps? What about the fact the basketball program at my school starts the first day of school and will start back up the Monday after the state tournament. Fall baseball gets to wear helmets, what if you told them they could not wear helmets, what storm would that start. Makes no sense what so ever. How about the KHSAA attack AAU basketball, if you read the basketball threads, over half of the transfers they deal with has some sort of AAU connection. Maybe someone could start AAU football. They won't touch AAU because of the almighty $$$$, too far gone to ask for this. I say as coaches we need to stand together on what "we" want and not what a select few want.

I was a little off. It's July 22 will be the first day of helments

Is it possible this rule will have the opposite effect? Could some teams go out and have 7 on 7's without helmets?

Makes me wonder if a 3 week dead period is coming...which, if so..good.

....but, football needs June for 7v7 and/or a Spring Practice game vs an outside opponent.

Boys Basketball is the KHSAA cash cow, so the KHSAA is going to favorite their cash cow. Even girls basketball tourney makes more than Football. Boys Basketball brings in more $ then all the other sports combined. With the PRP thing a few years ago, Tackett isn't going to give football any leeway.

Need three full weeks of Spring practice with all teams playing a Spring Game, at one location per region, against each other in conjunction with an official clinic ran the week prior to the Spring Game.
