No Helmets till July 22

I agree. I think that's a coaching decision if they want to give kids time off. We do and it works, but limit acticities drives me crazy!

I'm just glad someone else got it. Thanks Sportsfan 08!

You guys want to talk about someone "nailing it"?, he got it....

I would like to see them eliminate June and July to give kids time to be kids.

Eliminate the Bye week.

Eliminate First 2 rounds of the playoffs.

Start practice last week of July.

Allow teams to go into camp and work with other teams (7 on 7 - Teams able to scrimmage - O-line work)

I dont understand why everyone gets excited about 7 on 7. When what teams are trying to get done could get done in a week by allowing teams to camp together for the purpose of getting better.

I really don't think "everyone" gets excited about 7 on 7. But that option should be available to those coaches that want to do that. If it is well thought out and June is used properly a coach can work their installation in small increments to prepare for July and August. But to try to do this in a week would be to overwork the kids that are out of shape since they would be taking the whole summer off. I get the let the kids be kids idea that i read on here sometimes but kids are doing what now a days? Sitting inside on computers. Many of us do this way to much including myself. This is not a bash against your idea but I don't think waiting later and later will help get the kids ready and develop teams very well. Football does not have to be complicated but it is COMPLEX. To develop players correctly and safely practice time is needed even if it is not full tilt scrimmaging. Football has changed dramatically. It is time for Kentucky to recognize this imo. There is no perfect answer to the issues that is for sure. I read where another poster put on here that it is basically frustrating for football coaches to give their players time off and then see that many of them are hit up by other sports coaches to work out since football is not doing anything at that time. What needs to happen to make that work is not possible. AAU, travel baseball and those types of things can't be eliminated as far as I can tell. Personally I would rather work shorter practices and put more days in. I think the amount of time we have now is enough. But to keep cutting things out of football is a mistake in my humble opinion.

No

7on7 without helmets

Then let me throw this out there. 7on7 with out helmets is dangerous and stupid.

At some point someone REALLY needs to actually take the players safety into account rather then just play lip service to it.

Any coach who does this should be fired. He has no concern for player safety. All tournaments I've been associated with require helmets and mouthpieces.

I had heard or read (guess I'm getting old) that some NKY schools added an extra week of dead period. 1. Is this true? 2. Could this be a way of keeping it fair? 3. Could we be looking at another week of dead period across the state ?

I hope so.

This whole take June off to help football is a bunch on nonsense. How much time do kids really need? If they have from Thursday at 12 until Monday morning off; that's half the week. They already have every afternoon free Monday - Wednesday. Plus, most good coaches excuse kids in June if they are going out of town or have family commitments. If people would learn how to communicate and run programs these would be non-issues. But please stop with all this longer dead period stuff. It's ridiculous.

That's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it. I think you're totally wrong. And I don't wan't June off for the benefit of football I want June off for the benefit of the kids.

That's the point. They are only spending 16 hours a week max a football. Most programs are done by 11 or 12. What are kids really doing before 11 or 12 in the summer anyway?

Some coaches do this anyway. Using common sense and having your finger on the 'pulse' of your kids/community are part of coaching that sometimes gets overlooked. If I am a good coach I don't need others requiring me to give time off. I should recognize the need for it. I guess some people don't see it that way. I hear that Belfry starts practice the last week of July. I don't know if that is a fact it is just what i am told by a friend that coaches over there. I don't know if they lift during the summer or not. Obviously if you are in the finals most years you get additional weeks of practice etc. so you can afford to start later because the amount of time added to your season. It is like what college coaches say they get out of the additional practices when they go to a bowl. But no everyone gets to do this all that often in high school. I do agree that it is a long season but that is the nature of the sport. Using good judgment will help your kids. That is what coaching is about anyway imo.

Why not let the coach decide this? It's his job to plan.

My other problem with starting July 22 is you guys will do 3 weeks of 2 days and that's where the injuries occur.

It's common sense guys... start July 10. If coaches don't want to then fine don't. Coaches need to go by heat index guidelines for practice. What are you guys going to say now, we can't practice from 7-9am or 6pm-8pm? Oops do that anyway cause I don't have coaches in building and they have "real jobs". It really surprises me that we have this many coaches who can't figure some things out.

If you want more vacation then take it. If not and you just don't want to do the job, them it's time for retirement. One day I will wake up and say hell with this, and resign right then and there.

Why do people still do 2 a days? If it's really about player safety why not just figure out how to get it done in one practice and let that be enough. I would venture a guess that most injuries in the summer come from kids trying to shut it down and re-start a few hours later with out being able to recover properly.

Is there any word on when this will be made final?

For two a days only one practice can be full contact, so one of them would essentially be like a 7-7.

That's not the case at some schools. There are some "mystery" camps that have scrimmages and full contact in the morning and evening
