No Helmets till July 22

Featured Replies

This could be a great thing if done correctly...meaning, that it doesn't take a week away from football.

I've always wanted the start of the season to be Labor Day weekend as it is for college. Think about this...high school basketball and baseball all start AFTER College and Pro seasons. For whatever reasons, the high school football season has to be the odd man out there, starting 2-3 weeks before the start of the College and NFL seasons.

*Let football get a piece of the June pie back, allow 7v7.

*July 1-21st dead period. Or make it the whole month of July (our dead period isn't the reason we aren't the,Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida's of the HS Football world...sorry)

*Opening weekend of the season Labor Day.

*11 game regular season (For all of the 'four teams to the playoffs' fans. There is your extra game, because that's really all it is. It's not like the "hope" of bwing Cinderella is all that justified.

*Top two from each district to the dance.

*Finals week stays the same if 10 game reg season. Backs up a week if 11.

The end.

...and, how Ram layed out the Spring Practice regs.

Cutting our nose despite our face. An indoor sport that kids can play numerous games in a day is dictating when the season ends. State finals in second to third week of December. I hate the top 2 suggestions. At least one state finalist was a 3 seed this year. Give a wild card a chance.

Get us out of the summer for sure. Odd thing is we are almost 10 years removed from a nationally covered case in ky when heat and football was in question. We are just now talking moving the season.

I am still in the process of trying to understand what this is, the origin, etc. Talking to other coaches today, including those on the advisory committee, they are in the same boat I am. To the best of my understanding, every restriction or rule change has come from safety/concussions/heat concerns. Paranoia is my best thing....no one does it better than I do, but I am not buying the "basketball is behind this" theory. Safety concerns and fear of litigation would be the motivation. If a medical group/research report comes out recommending these types of restrictions, and you don't go along, it is my understanding you are pretty easily defeated in a lawsuit. I wish Leatherneck would give his insights on this and if that is the case.

I continue to look at this differently, but still with safety for the student-athlete being number 1. I think we are safer to put the helmets on July 10 to get use to them and for the protection. I still think getting use to a helmet takes time.

While I do understand and abide by the rules, I believe my safest, best-conditioned teams were the ones that had triple sessions. Our last practice was 2:30 to 4:15. We used common sense, removed gear if it was really hot, or went full gear but took a lot of breaks and shortened the periods. When those guys played on a hot August Friday night, they were ready to roll. Now, the first Friday nights are tougher on our kids.

I agree with Harry Doyle....this may all be pushing back the start of the season to cooler temperatures, which is fine with me. But, at some point, we have to prep our kids for heat, contact, and the pace of the game. I do think that those in positions of influence understand that we can restrict ourselves out of preparing our kids and that we have to be careful to avoid that happening. But, no one wants to be the guy to stand up and say that, except an idiot like ChiefSmoke. :sssh:

Who respects it less?

I know quite a few people who are losing respect for this game because of how soft it has become. It's saddening.

Game ain't soft man. Give me a break.

Please tell me how it isn't? All these rules and regulations now are awful. You can't hit anymore because it's a penalty. It, IMO, is getting soft.

Don't worry, the other guys are saying it, they just aren't standing up. lol

I agree with much of what you said, but I do think a "small" group of football coaches and basketball coaches could be behind it. The reason I say that is, the June/July thing worked that way and, in my opinion, had nothing to do with safety concerns, but the desires of the aforementioned group.

In all seriousness, as some point, the quiet, well educated and knowledgable coaches like yourself are going to have to make butts of yourselves to stop some of these restrictions.

well kids are bigger stronger and faster than they were 10 years ago.

Add that to the fact they now cover the entire field.

All the heat related deaths are, and have been, correlated to one of two things: improper acclamation or congenital defects. That is one of the reasons why I shake my head at this decision, taking away acclamation time.

I'm not against playing football in cooler temperatures, but the fact remains that at some point football is going to take place in the hottest part of the year and some of the uncomfortably cold part of the year.

I believe some of these rules are results of knee jerk reactions. Media jumps in a gets the ball rolling a certain direction. An old wise man told me today something that got my attention. More students/kids have died the last 5 years in school bus fatalities than in the history of high school football and still no school bus seat belt restrictions.

Don't worry, the other guys are saying it, they just aren't standing up. lol
