You know were my loyalty lies, but I would agree with @Clyde, solely based on NewCath's lack of a dominate big man, although the jury is still out on Wurtz and Soph. Brenden Luken. Also, CovCath has some very strong classes now and coming up from the grade school ranks. NewCath will be in the mix for sure, but as STRONG as the last 4-5 years?????? However, you still have to play the game, and anything can happen.

 

My problem with Clyde's comment was that, with a broad brush, he dismissed any chance that NCC has to win the region "for a while." Anytime someone thinks they have the vision to see into the future and declare that a team has no chance to win any longer, that person should get called out. No one can see into the future. No one knows how players will develop. The general theme is that NO ONE KNOWS. To dismiss a team is to insult their potential, their history, and their effort. To dismiss a team is also a fallacy of logic and human nature. We cannot say something so dismissive with such certainty. There is too much at play.

 

There are a ton of great teams in the 9th and 10th. Still, there are some who only think there is one team of true worth in both of these regions. Only one team can be counted on to advance. The rest are dismissed. This is an insult to those other teams. That's all.

 

Specifically, NewCath's case, they continually win with under 400 students, each and every year. Always going to states in football, always competitive in basketball, in the picture in soccer and track. I'm sure I'm missing other sports, but for a school that small to be so good in athletics is very rare. They are not to be dismissed. Their history is formidable.

I can't think of a player since Dicky Beal where it was an event to go watch. He drew fans from all over to watch him go.

 

Unfortunately I was away for those years so only could follow via limited newspaper coverage and the sweet sixteen televised games. Wish I had seen him and those teams live.

With all the training speed agility and camps kids can go to now you dont know what a kid is going to look like in any sport year yo year. It comes down to the players buying in to the programs. No teams should ever be counted out.

What was it about the period of the late 1960s to 1980 that schools had such extended runs?

 

CovCath with the 5 in a row, NewCath then with 3 in a row, and then Holmes with their run.......

 

If I remember mostly those teams were Jr and Sr dominated so it wasn't like they rode one class to success. Their Varsity roster changed significantly pretty much every year.

Unfortunately, as a player who had to play against him numerous times, I had to watch him go...and go...and go...more times than I want to admit.

A lot of people were not surprised by NCC winning region. They have been considered a top 3 or 4 team in the region all year with the best player in the region. Anything can happen in one game.

 

Another thought. Let's say Cov Cath wins the region 3 out of the next 5 years ( all hypothetical), I would consider that about apart of the same "dynasty".

Imagine getting to watch him from the time he was 8 and pouring in 50 plus in youth games. How good would Highlands have been if Sugar Bear was able to get him their to play with Vories, Sullivan, Muntis, Malone and company? Wow!!
