Imagine getting to watch him from the time he was 8 and pouring in 50 plus in youth games. How good would Highlands have been if Sugar Bear was able to get him their to play with Vories, Sullivan, Muntis, Malone and company? Wow!!

 

The wow factor was just not Dicky, but the guys he played with as well. Those were some of the very best teams ever in the 9th region.

Heck, I enjoyed watching Holmes warm up as much as the games back in the day.

When Dicky played for Covington Junior High he wasn't even the best guard on the floor, that was a young man named Steve Briscoe. Steve moved to Ohio and played in Cincinnati. Imagine how good Holmes would have been if Briscoe stays in Covington? Wow is right!!!

I can't think of a player since Dicky Beal where it was an event to go watch. He drew fans from all over to watch him go.

 

The Holy Cross game, the year escapes me, where he single handedly brought the Bulldogs back in the 4th quarter of that game for a win. And I'll never forget when #1 in the state at the time (again the year escapes me) Lex Bryan Station came to Evans Fieldhouse with big 6'11" Melvin Turpin and Dicky outjumped him on a jump ball. The place went nuts and Holmes knocked them off that night. Dicky was electric!

Yeah, I'm from the Simpson, Foster, Patton, Ramsey, Riley, Older Meyer, Kavanaugh, Hursts, Grober, Whatley, Older Humphrey, etc days.

Phil was an outstanding player who graduated in 79 and then Mark Elmer took over in 80 on the state semi-final team.

Newcath will always be in the mix to say covcath I the next 2 years will be head and shoulders over everyone in the 9th is a dumb statement. Just because you have the best team doesn't always guaranteed you to win the region. The last 3 years NewCath was the best team did they win it no. This year everyone thought CovCath was the best team did they win the region no. It's basketball man anything can happen that's why this sport is awesome. Go Breds

 

I am pretty sure no one said in the Preseason, that CCH was the clear cut favorite this year: it was a 3 team race with CCH, NCC, and Cooper.

Dicky also played as a sophomore in the backcourt with Mark Moeves. Elmer and Whatley were with him in the backcourt his senior year in 1980.

Moore and Morris were part of the regional championship team with Bruce Tilley, Doug Schloemer, Roy Meyer, Eddie Ross. Dicky was not on the varsity that season in 1975-76.

Turpin did not play in the 1979-80 season for Bryan Station, he was at Fork Union Military Academy. That Defenders team featured Keith Berry and William Conner at forward, with Kim Clay at guard.
