I am willing to bet that the H.S. coach advised the kid to not accept the grey shirt deal.

This happens all the time. The problem however was due to the timing of the pulled offer. It was done just 48 hours before signing day and that isn't a lot of time to find another school especially when I would imagine some of the other schools already had that spot filled by that time.

 

It's not like signing day is the only day the kid can sign an offer. If the kid is good he won't have a hard time landing on his feet. I'm thinking UL wasn't his only offer.

If I am a player, but more so a parent of a player a this school I would have more than a few words for the coach. NO high school coach will ever tell a college team that they can't recruit my kid! For the heck of it, if I was UL, I would look at every inch of game film from this high school and try to find a player that they can give something to, I don't care who it is. Like CoachBuckett mentioned, make the high school coach look foolish that the college coach by passed him and is only dealing with the parents. Will be a pretty big blow to that HS coaches ego.....

 

This is why you need a back up plan. This happens more than people know. Offers on the table for 6 months then a better player comes by.

Coach from an Ohio school said the same thing about UC a couple years ago and the following year UC landed, I think, a lineman from that same school.

I would assume, he was the lead recruiter for that player and because that is his area of the country he is responsible for.

Coaches are responsible for an area of the country, not a position. This was probably his territory.

Wondering if there would be thread if the roles were reversed. What if the kid pulled his commitment and signed with South Carolina 2 days before? Me thinks not.

 

For the record I loath Petrino. However anyone that has a problem with this needs to take the entire system to task. Coaches are making millions to win, that means cut throat decisions.

The worse thing to me is the coach who gets rid of the scholarship sophomore and junior who never panned put and won't contribute, just to make room for more freshman a scholly players. The NCAA needs to raise the scholarship limit above 80. If you are allowed to take 25 per class which is 100 every 4 years, then why are you only allowed to keep 80? Counter intuitive to me.

Maybe UK should have picked up the offer sheet and took him, seems like a real good player.

So from the other thread article a grey shirt was offered. Meaning enroll in the spring term and then get another year of eligibility. That also means sitting out freshmen football season and 1 semester of classes.

 

How does the scholarship factor work? Is it one of the next years scholarships or as long the team has less than the 80 limit they can grant him a scholarship starting with the Spring term?

 

Example: If the team is at 80 scholarships at start of the season and 2 player are ....lets say dismissed...' does the team have 2 scholarships to use on incoming 2 grey shirts who would start in January?
