I thought Murrer was an offensive tackle only.

CKSportsFan...now it has to be FBS..not FCS and has to be scholarship not walk on or preferred. I would say to that any player that gets any offer from a D1 program should be at least HM on any State list.

Olmstead was honorable mention All-State by the C-J.

 

Hedger wasn't listed, but it's harder for TEs to make it when they're lumped in with WR or OL and not by themselves (same with FB when they're lumped in with RB).

 

According to yahoo, Hedger has three offers (Austin Peay, Hampton and Holy Cross), but none from the 70+ FBS schools (when Jason Frakes was talking about D-I, he was probably referring to FBS and not FCS which non-scholarship Morehead, non-scholarship Dayton and the non-scholarship Ivy League schools play in).

 

Big difference between Auburn and Austin Peay or between Hawaii and Hampton.

If Murrer was on CJ's 2nd team defense, that shows me what an absolute joke the CJ is on this subject. Sam hasn't played defense for Cov Cath in all the time he's been there.

Him being called out on 2nd team defense is about as big a slap in the face as not being on their at all IMO- it shows the laziness of the people voting and discredits the results.

Tell me about a kid with a D1 offer who's not on The Courier-Journal's All-State team.

The same group that picks Mr Football from the seven finalists that are listed puts the only wide receiver that is a finalist as an HM player. Chew on that for a while.

 

I also find it very entertaining as well. However, coming from OH, I have seen this play out like ground hog day since the 1970s. Unfortunately, it is a terribly flawed system and its a disservice to the boys who do not get the recognition they deserve.

 

What does surprise me is why it is not done by division or multiple divisions together? Like, Div 1-III All State, Div-IV-VI, like a lot of states do? Maybe not a fix but I think it would definitely help.

Okay, but what does having a d1 scholarship have to do with an individual award for your accomplishments in high school??? Is that a criteria that starts the list? Tell me all the d1 recruits and go from there??? So no one that's a little undersized, may not want to play football in college, decided to go to a smaller school has a chance to be first team if there are kids with "potential" that have a d1 scholarship? Even though one of the other kids potentially outplayed them in high school. It really concerns me that the defense of any list that has to do with high school recognition has anything to do with what future offers a kid has.

If you feel bad about Northern KY kids, take a look at the kids from northeastern KY. There are none. The Baker kid from Ashland with more that one D1 offer and first team Courier Journal and not even HM on the AP. I have a feeling that our media rep once again dropped the ball with the ballot and several kids from Paintsville to Greenup to Rowan never had a chance to garner a vote.

With respect Horton, Hatfield, and Francis from Belfry should be on every All-State list. IMHO Horton was the most disruptive defensive player in the entire state. Hatfield was one of the best all-around players statewide and Francis has been the best lineman on one of the State's Top Lines the past two years (maybe even the past three).

 

Bentley was First team All-State AP so it was more than one AP voter who felt he belonged there. (I personally think he was more 3rd Team or honorable mention caliber as a Sophomore). Stanley had 178 tackles (you read that right) so I think at the minimum Honorable Mention was well warranted.

 

Mullins is the only Belfry player who I think was a bit of a stretch as an All-State vote. Very good linemen but with all due respect probably the third or fourth best lineman Belfry had.

I knew it was coming. There's no disrespect for those kids. Just that it shows how big a joke the AP has become.

This list is an absolute joke. Having only 2 NKy kids on the whole thing smells! BGP is far and away the best All-State Team year in and year out. The AP writers should be ashamed!!! Horrible!!!

Apparently if you get one person on the squad you must 4-5 others, alot of misses on this team IMO.

Would this work for a true all-state team? Have coaches nominate kids. To nominate, it requires a write up as to why a certain kid deserves consideration. Then, you have a third party KHSAA association look thru all the nominations by position. You dwindle down the to the top 10 (just a guess) at each position. Stats and accomplishments should help to filter this pretty quickly at first glance. Then start to dissect those 10 much closer, looking at that year's stats and accomplishment, who they played and how they made their team better. Seems like it would be worth the effort in comparison to the effort these kids put in to work at their skill.

 

Then you post the programs that nominated kids or participated. You don't have to post who they nominated, but whether they participated...even if they didn't have any nominations and they at least got back to you saying so. This would hold the programs accountable for making sure they at least had a say and a chance to nominate their top kids.

 

I know some will say, well you'll have coaches writing up every kid and then it becomes hard to manage. My guess is that if you require a write up, that a coach is not going to take the time to write up all his kids. He will most likely take his top kids and write them up. And if a coach did write up all the kids, it would become very obvious very early in the process and it would most likely hurt any of his kids that actually had a shot because the committee would use the ole "consider the source" philosophy when evaluating one of his kids.

 

If we are relying on journalist to truly evaluate talent across the state, it will never be correct. Nothing against them, but it's just may not be as important to some as it is others and that's not fair to the kids. I also say you can't count on the coaches, because some hold grudges and some would never vote for anyone outside their region. I know that's not right, but it happens.
