13th Region

 

G - Phil Cox, G - Richie Farmer, G - Charles Thomas, F - Nick Sanford C - Wah Jones

Didn't Cumberland have a great team around 1982 or 83 led by a terrific player named Garrett Gregory? If I have the name correct he was around 6'6 and I think went on to star at Cumberland College. They were heavy favorites to win the 13th that year but was upset and knocked out.

Garrett Gregory graduated in 1983 and went on to a great career at Cumberland College. Cumberland High School lost in the first round of the district tourney that year to Evarts and Billy Hicks.

Middlesboro beat Cawood in overtime that year in the regional finals. I think Cawood was the favorite that year in the district, not Cumberland. Evarts actually won the district with big wins over Cumberland and Cawood.

Cumberland's best team was probably 1985. They lost in the regional finals in the last seconds to Clay, which ended up being the state runner up.

HDE - was hoping you'd come in and help out on this one, definitely respect your opinion on the 13th.

Finally, do you remember Ben Franklin at OBI and/or have you had any conversations with others about what a great player he was?

I Coached at Oneida a couple years before Franklin arrived. The kids I Coached, Roger Caldwell, Don Grey, David Mills along with Franklin beat Clay Co. in the Dist. Should have won the regional. Ben was a Great High School Basketball player. Having Coached against him I know. People keep leaving Pearl Hicks off their list. I tried to find some stats on him, all I could find was where he scored 31 in Dist. Tourney. Pearl was 6' 7" and could play. Started for WKU.

Yes indeed. Knew some info, but Google provided more. Frank is still the only Division I player to score 100 points in a game (for Furman in South Carolina.)

 

Was twice an NBA all-star...playing most of his 9-year career with the Lakers.

ANTWAIN BARBOUR (JUCO/UK) was Mr. Basketball at Elizabethtown. Also has a tryout with the Cavs ... when LeBron was there the first time. STEFFPHON PETTIGREW (WKU) of Elizabethtown was Mr. Basketball. Both Pettigrew and Barbour are still playing overseas.

 

ELTON SCOTT (Marion County/West Virginia) was also Mr. Basketball.

 

JARED MCCURRY (Elizabethtown) played overseas.

 

KEVIN BRIDGEWATERS (Adair/Chattanooga) is still playing overseas and was a Mr. Basketball finalist.

 

John Hardin has had several D-I guys in its short time: Brandon Bland (Bowling Green), Maze Stallworth (Morehead), Greg LeSage (Green Bay), Brandon Price (WKU).

 

When Meade was still in the 5th, Bart Miller lit it up for Meade. Played at Marquette.

 

JAMES JETER of North Hardin was inducted into the KHSAA hall of fame in 1992. Maybe best pure athlete to ever play in 5th Region, as his track records spoke for themselves.

DONTAIE SMITH of North Hardin held the state's single-game 3-point record at one point. Younger brother QUINTON SMITH was also a 3-point master who played D-I (Morehead).

 

The Sykes brothers, older Joe (Louisville) and younger Jamarious (Jackson State) both played at North Hardin. ... Jamarious is arguably tallest player in region history at 7-FOOT-2.

Four guys who went pro in other sports also played basketball in the 5th. Current NFL lineman Brandon Deaderick played basketball at E'town. Former UK lineman Zipp Duncan, who had a brief stint in the NFL, played basketball at E'town. Quarterback Andre Woodson, who was briefly with the Giants after setting records at UK, was runner-up for Area Basketball Player of the Year (to LaRue's Roman Ritchey) for North Hardin. And current free-agent pitcher Nathan (Nate) Adcock played basketball for North Hardin.

Although I am a 3rd region and 7th region fan, I took that statement as a challenge, so I figured I could come up with a 2nd region team. I was impressed with the quality of players I came up with.

 

I had 2 major challenges. First, what to do with Tony Key? I never saw him play and he left Russellville after his junior year. Things did not work out for him as he hoped after he left, but the reports of his dominating play in the 99-00 season are impressive. I have included him, but understand that others would leave him off.

 

Second, I had trouble limiting the team to 5. I thought about having an old team and more recent team, but decided to just list 10.

So sorry. Of course Travis Ford would be on there. Don't know how I missed him (I saw him play in high school). He definitely would be on there.
