No, I wouldn't bc Hatton is nowhere close to the top all time players in the 9th region.

Often forgotten and overlooked because he played for CovCath in 1981, (the year Simon Kenton won the Sweet 16), dominant center Don Turney was a gift to the Colonels that season, and he carried them on his back to the 9th Region Finals.

 

He then had a successful career playing for Marshall, and was picked up in the NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers.

I don't know many from the 5th region, but I know Clem Haskins would be on it.

Breck Co. has been 3rd region for as long as I have followed high school sports. I just used guys from teams in the region now. I'm not really sure where to even access records of who was in what region each year.

 

This website might be as close as you can come...and it would still take a little digging. It has scores (and usually, coaches...and frequently, records) of every district, region and state tourney game that is available...so far. We are still working on it.

Yeah..forgot about him..He was a coach also..over 500 wins. Good catch

14th Region probably would start with Johnny Cox of Hazard's 1956 state championship team, and later was an All American player on Kentucky's 1958 national championship team.

After that probably another Hazard great, Jim Rose, who played in the state tournament 4 straight years and later was a starting guard on Western Kentucky's 1971 Final Four team that crushed UK on their March through the NCAA tourney.

Lee County's Larry Stamper, who carried the Bobcats to the 1968 state semifinals (where they lost in overtime to Seneca) and later played for Rupp and Hall (senior year) at UK, would definitely have to be in the top 5.

Knott County County's Herbie Stamper starred for Morehead State in the late 1970's.

And I'm a little biased with my next choice but a player from my home county of Owsley, Paul Smith, scored over 3,000 points in his high school career (but the old score books are long gone and his records never reported to the KHSAA) went on to play guard at Mississippi State from 1963-66.

 

 

There's many more good ones from the 14th and I may list some more later in another post.

Correction on my above post: Johnny Cox and Hazard won the 1955 state championship, not 1956. The title in 1956 went to another 14th Region school, Carr Creek. That was the last year the 14th has won a state boys basketball title.........until this year Knott Central team brings one home. Carr Creek was also a Knott County school, as was another state championship team from the early 1940's, Hindman.

I don't know many from the 5th region, but I know Clem Haskins would be on it.
