Bush was an awesome athlete but he chose the right sport.

 

Definitely so.

 

I was just meaning that I thought he could have had a career for a few years in the NBA as a Tony Allen-type lockdown defender if that's what he'd chosen.

 

100% agree that he picked the right sport though and always wonder "what if" when thinking about the knee injury he suffered in college.

12th would have a decent team but I'll let someone more knowledgeable list them.

I would add. George Bryant Burnside. Aaron Watts McCreary.

14th Region probably would start with Johnny Cox of Hazard's 1956 state championship team, and later was an All American player on Kentucky's 1958 national championship team.

After that probably another Hazard great, Jim Rose, who played in the state tournament 4 straight years and later was a starting guard on Western Kentucky's 1971 Final Four team that crushed UK on their March through the NCAA tourney.

Lee County's Larry Stamper, who carried the Bobcats to the 1968 state semifinals (where they lost in overtime to Seneca) and later played for Rupp and Hall (senior year) at UK, would definitely have to be in the top 5.

Knott County County's Herbie Stamper starred for Morehead State in the late 1970's.

And I'm a little biased with my next choice but a player from my home county of Owsley, Paul Smith, scored over 3,000 points in his high school career (but the old score books are long gone and his records never reported to the KHSAA) went on to play guard at Mississippi State from 1963-66.

 

 

There's many more good ones from the 14th and I may list some more later in another post.

 

Mickey Gibson from Hazard and Ike Whitaker from Leslie County were 2 Great ones.

All-time team in the 13th Region is really guard-heavy, but from my knowledge of it, those are the best of the best, so here goes. Will need some help from people on some of the older names. I know I'm going to leave some people out, but here goes. I know I've named 6 starters, but it was hard to differentiate any out of the top 6 (and the only reason it wasn't 7 with Shannon Hoskins is because part of his career was in the 14th).

(Played professionally, cannot remember if it was overseas or abroad, hopefully someone can help me on this one; have heard from lots of people who really know the game that he was an unreal player and honestly could be the best one on this list)

 

G - Phil Cox - Cawood - Vanderbilt

(1981 KY Mr. Basketball; Held Vandy's scoring record until 2004)

 

G - Charles Thomas - Harlan - Minnesota

(1994 KY Mr. Basketball; played in Final Four at Minnesota and played a key role on their team)

 

G - Richie Farmer - Clay County - Kentucky

(1987 KY Mr. Basketball; played at Kentucky)

 

G - Tony Pietrowski - Corbin - LSU

(Led some really good Corbin teams in the early 90's and went on to play at LSU... guard with serious skills)

 

G - Rodney Woods - Lone Jack - Tennessee

(In a region loaded with great guards, he might be one of the best)

(Started and/or played lots at South Carolina as a freshman, but the narrative is that he didn't like flying and later transferred back home to play for Happy at Georgetown; now coaches Perry County Central)

(Only played a few games before being declared ineligible; might have played professionally as well)

 

G - Russ Chadwell - Clay County - Georgetown College

(Unreal leaper; funny story, was actually playing on a bad ankle in the 1987 Sweet 16 but still wowed everyone with his leaping ability; telling people I'm from Clay County, I usually get lots of questions from older fans about where he ended up playing in college and/or if he has any kids coming up through the system)

 

G - Russ Farmer - Clay County

(Baseball was his best sport; One of the best pure shooters to play in the 13th; Leading scorer on the State's last team to go undefeated)

 

G - Ty Profitt - South Laurel - Notre Dame/Morehead State

(It might not be fair to him that I don't know how to rate him accurately, but I have him here because the bulk of his career was in the 12th Region; he helped bring a State title to London, played at Notre Dame, and participated in a game that gave Morehead State a program defining win over Louisville in the NCAA Tournament)

 

G - Paul "Showtime" Gaffney - Lynch - Harlem Globetrotters

(Pure entertainment value, no one beats him on this list; Have heard people confirm that he could play; was definitely my favorite Globetrotter and has gone on to accomplish lots of things in the basketball world)

 

G - Mark Jason Smith - Clay County

(Academic scholly, but easily could have played in college; holds State records for free throw percentage; won the Ted Sanford award at the State Tournament)

 

G - Larry Allen Gritton - Oneida Baptist Institute

(Still holds some free throw and possibly assist or points records from his playing days in the early 90's; took OBI to the All-A Classic and was on a team that beat Clay County in the district tournament, was hurt early in the team's regional game against Corbin, otherwise the team possibly could have went further)

Ron King and Central were 6th Region. But I'd like to see Manual Forrest Moore HS on that list

Wasn't Central in the 7th in the 60's and some of the 70's? If this is true, I don't know it it was during King's time there. (Remember that King's teammate, Otto Petty, also went on to start for Fla. State....quite a team they had.)

2 Clay County Greats. Gary Gregory and Pearl Hicks. Both played at WKU both were great High School Players.
