Here's how I look at it. If it was the old system and they only took two teams for the National Championship game would Baylor or TCU be there? No, so I'm fine with it.

 

I've said all along that I'd rather argue about who is the 4th or 5th best team than who is the 2nd or 3rd.

Until Saturday, none of the teams had gone out and won a conference championship. On Saturday, everybody took care of business. Alabama won the SEC. Oregon won the Pac 10. Florida State won the ACC. Ohio State won the Big 10. Baylor won the Big 12. Their "championship" was the most debatable because there is no championship game.

 

It wasn't so much a matter of TCU dropping as it was that the three schools immediately below them each went out and as a result of clinching conference championships - and rose one spot in the rankings.

 

They got the correct four teams in the mix. We can quibble about the order, but that;s about it.

 

The Big 12 gambled and lost. Had they declared Baylor Champions, I bet Baylor gets in. I truly think the worst resume in the field is FSU. I know they are undefeated, but they have less quality wins than everybody in the top 6. IMO, if they weren't defending champs, they don't get in. The ACC just isn't a good conference.

The system isn't going to change. The 4 conferences with the juice got exactly what they wanted so all is good in CFB Playoff land...

 

Without a doubt. This has been pure gold. People clamoring for more teams, are you going to get this worked up trying to distinguish between Missouri or Boise State making the final 16? No.

It amuses me that people slam FSU's schedule and conference all year long, but the only time their SOS really gets knocked is when comparing them to SEC teams. It's like it is forgotten as a metric to compare to others.

 

FSU's SOS was 36th. Baylor's was 59th. FSU went unbeaten against a better schedule while Baylor took a loss - and not even a particularly great loss. If you reversed those SOS numbers then you might have an argument. In fact, reverse them and it's basically the argument between FSU and Alabama and clearly Alabama was the team chosen to have a better resume. It can't be disputed that Baylor has a better win than FSU. Baylor has a win over the consensus #6 team in the nation, trumping FSU's best win which came over Georgia Tech, which is anywhere from 12 (CFP) to 9 (Coaches). Kansas State is basically an even win with Georgia Tech. Beyond that? Crickets. Oklahoma losing to OK State took away one of their other bargaining chips and at the end of the day, Baylor scheduled SMU, Northwestern State, and Buffalo out of conference. FSU ended up with wins over three top 25 teams which was more than Baylor, had a better SOS than Baylor, and did not have a loss against that better schedule. Baylor had a better top line win and certainly looked more impressive most of the time, but their resume was not better.

 

TCU had an even worse case since they didn't have the additional top win. Their win over Kansas State was thus equal to FSU's over Georgia Tech, and then they had no other one to fall back on. They have one other top 25 win if you use the CFP (Minnesota) or Coaches poll (Oklahoma). Their SOS was 53rd, having played Samford, SMU, and Minnesota out of conference. So them vs. FSU stacks up thusly: Equal top line win, less top 25 wins, lower SOS, and a loss against that lower SOS. And despite what the Big 12 would try to claim, they weren't champions of their own conference. Not only is that worse, it is definitively worse.

 

Ohio State is back more in the Baylor type argument, but mostly better. Their SOS was 45th, so still slightly lower. Their best win was over Michigan State on the road, so better than FSU's over Georgia Tech at neutral site. Their win over Wisconsin at a neutral site was so bad it devalued the Badgers, but it was roughly on par or slightly better than FSU's over Clemson since FSU won at home (albeit with a backup QB - just like OSU). OSU had a backend Top 25 win over Minnesota if you count the CFP ranks, which places it behind FSU's other top 25 win at Louisville. And, like FSU, that's basically where the topline wins stop. That's when you get to the trump card - Ohio State lost while FSU did. And not only did OSU lose, they lost to a middling Virginia Tech team that went 6-6 and is in the conference that Florida State won. Virginia Tech lost to five teams FSU beat.

 

That's resumes. Not a single one is better than FSU, so no, FSU did not have the weakest resume. I don't even think they had less quality wins than all three, just Baylor, and that's just if you stop at two. I absolutely believe FSU gets in even if they aren't defending champs, and even if they didn't make the title game at all last year. They were an undefeated team in a power 5 conference and they don't have the stones to send one of those out, nor should they have since, again, their resume was not worse.

 

The only thing that people truly have that I would buy them believing FSU should be out is that they didn't LOOK particularly good doing it, thus people THINK those other three (and others) would beat FSU if given the chance. Basically, you have the eye test, and little else for support.

Going to an 8 team playoff would solve a lot of issues as I don't think there are many people who think teams 9 and lower would have much of a chance of advancing. It would only add a week to the current set up so they could start the first playoff games a week early and finish on the same day as this year's NC game.

There is a difference in people taking issue with the process and there being an issue. Is it going to generate as much interest expanding to X amount of teams? That is the que$tion.

This came to my mind this morning on the Mike and Mike when the Big 12 commish made a mention of expansion possibility. Being a looooong time Memphis fan, we have long looked for an opportunity to join a stable and competitive first class league. Actually this past year with the AAC has been a good one. Although the league does not have any history, it is made up of good schools with mainly good sports histories.

 

It would be quite a move for Memphis to join the Big 12+!
