As I've said for many years the fake rivalries were never created by OSU people. I picked UL to go either 7-5 or 8-4 in the preseason and said many times they had some good wins this year. I also said now that Strong left that UK will pass them in recruiting, which could eventually leap UK ahead of them in football but time will tell. It's a 10-1 ratio of UK people trashing OSU. You really expect there to be friendly rivalries on here?

I think ultimately the committe got the 4 teams correct in the end, however, how do you explain TCU dropping 3 spots by beating a team by 50. In doing so the committee is basically saying that they had it wrong the week before.

 

They set themselves up for a lot of second guessing by not only that, but how did Florida St. jump ahead of TCU based upon this weekend. I think FSU should be in, but if they were #4 last week, isn't it logical to think that if OSU bumps anyone out, it would be the team sitting at #4. So did last week's rankings really not mean anything at all? If not, why did they reveal them?

Not sure I agree with you about the whoopin but I am looking forward to watch the game and see. I do wish JT Barrett was playing...that would have even been better to see.

I believe these are the realities:

 

-The committee goofed in the first place by moving TCU up to #3 last week. Even the many people who were down on FSU thought that was iffy. I believe the committee was trying to play geographic games and also trying to put distance between TCU and Baylor, figuring these would be the four. That's because.....

 

-The committee never dreamed Ohio State would do what they did to Wisconsin. If anything, the committee probably thought Wisconsin would beat Ohio State with their 3rd string QB, and thus FSU would create a nice buffer between TCU and Baylor. Once Ohio State did what they did, they realized they had a real problem. Because....

 

-No matter what, you can't leave out an undefeated power 5 conference champ under almost any circumstances. You ESPECIALLY can't do it year one and you ESPECIALLY can't do it to the defending champions. That would basically cause a revolt. Again, the committee probably thought they had a safe situation. If FSU lost (as a good deal of pundits thought they would), then they're on easy street with that decision. They'd still have a buffer of Ohio State between TCU and Baylor and not have to face that ugliness, and if Ohio State lost, then they were really on easy street, just putting in both Big 12 teams.

 

But nothing played out the way they wanted. They thought they had their four, and that's why TCU moved up to 3. Once Ohio State went off on Wisconsin coupled with FSU winning over a team they themselves had just outside the top 10, they realized they were up crap creek without a paddle. Alabama and Oregon were locks and they knew they could not leave out Florida State. Their choice was ignore a surging Ohio State team or invite anarchy by picking between the Big 12 teams. It was never a doubt what they'd do.

 

As for your last question about what did the rankings mean? Well I think you've correctly surmised that they weren't worth a whole heck of a lot week to week. I have fairly gleefully bashed their process multiple times on here. A large part of that is definitely frustration as a Florida State fan. But even setting that aside, it is plain to see that the committee had no clue as to what criteria they should use and how to defend their decisions. I made light of it before, but they'd say things about how many current top 25 teams a team had beaten one week, then say the next week that some team should be given more credit for where those teams were ranked when they played. The former is sort of ridiculous because the rankings they were basing their justification on WERE THEIR OWN. Any team can be ranked wherever the hell they wanted to rank them to justify what they were saying. The latter was even more ridiculous because many (most?) of those games predated their own rankings. And the particular team they were talking about the time, Mississippi State, was supposedly getting credit for top 10 wins over teams like Texas A&M and LSU. At the time they said it neither of those teams were in their own rankings. LSU only barely crept back in at the end and Auburn (the third such team) finished 19th. A&M of course was nowhere to be seen. They had no consistency in their justifications week to week which made it very easy to pick apart what they were doing. What happened to TCU at the end was simply the coup de grace. They shouldn't have been 3rd the previous week but there they were. Once they got in the situation where both FSU and OSU had to jump them, then, and apparently ONLY then, did the head to head finally come into play and knock them all the way to 6th.

 

The system needs some major, major changes next year.

The system isn't going to change. The 4 conferences with the juice got exactly what they wanted so all is good in CFB Playoff land...

There are other things beyond the TCU decision that you'll see they have consistency problems with. Why did Mississippi State jump from 10th to 7th while Michigan State (who was two spots ahead of them last week) remained at 8th? Was Mississippi State's sitting at home more impressive than Michigan State's? Neither team had a blessed thing change on their resumes as far as wins, and really the only major thing that changed was Michigan State went from having one loss to a playoff team to having both of their losses come to playoff teams. It's not that I don't think Mississippi State might not be better. They certainly had better wins. But nothing whatsoever changed on their resumes!

Until Saturday, none of the teams had gone out and won a conference championship. On Saturday, everybody took care of business. Alabama won the SEC. Oregon won the Pac 10. Florida State won the ACC. Ohio State won the Big 10. Baylor won the Big 12. Their "championship" was the most debatable because there is no championship game.

 

It wasn't so much a matter of TCU dropping as it was that the three schools immediately below them each went out and as a result of clinching conference championships - and rose one spot in the rankings.

 

They got the correct four teams in the mix. We can quibble about the order, but that;s about it.
