To be able to shut down our running game when no one else has been able to is quite an accomplishment. Haha, this Mayfield team is very healthy, it was beechwood this time with the injury. Looks like beechwoods stringer went out in the 2nd qtr with a foot sprain.

Mayfield only needed to go 12 yards for the score, but it wasn't easy. They finally scored on a 4th down 2 yard run by Trajon Bright, Herndon adding the extra point making it 7-0 just 3 minutes into the game. Beechwood took their next possession and plowed their way through the Mayfield defense. But the Cardinals defense did what Beechwood's could not and got a stop on a 4th down run from the 1. Mayfield was in their own end zone and made the safe offensive call, a quick lob down the sideline. Lane Kennemore outran the cornerback to the ball and the safety just missed getting there in time - end result a 99 yard TD pass and run and it was 14-0 Mayfield. Those first few possessions tell the tale on the game. Beechwood dominated the line scrimmage but could not convert when they needed a play, Mayfield did convert on their key plays and Mayfield made the big plays in the game.

 

Beechwood stuck with their game plan despite the 14-0 deficit and moved the ball downfield from their own 20 behind their running game featuring Ethan Stringer. Once again they were not able to finish the drive and had to settle for a 24 yard field goal by Mario German, 14-3 with 9:16 to go in the half. Mayfield used another big play in their next drive with QB Landon Arnett hitting a 45 yard completion on 3rd down to Marshall Bacon that set up first and goal inside the 5. Bright finished the drive with a 1 yard run and Mayfield led 21-3 with 6:28 to go in the half. Beechwood came back with a 68 yard drive and scored when QB Kyle Fieger completed a 15 yard TD pass to Jeremy Burns. The bad news for Beechwood was starting RB Ethan Stringer, who was nearing 100 yards rushing in the first half, left the game with a concussion. German's extra point made it 21-10 with 1:26 left, and that is how the half ended. Beechwood dominated time of possession, never punted, had over 200 yards offense in the half and trailed 21-10.

 

Mayfield received the second half kickoff and Beechwood fans who have seen these games over the past 5 years had to be concerned. Mayfield has taken control of these games in the second half. This year it was different. Beechwood forced a 3 and out on Mayfield's first possession. Then the punter dropped the snap, the Tiger's Riley McKown picked up the loose ball and ran it to the 3 yard line. Joe Studer ran it in from 3 yards out and it was a one score game at 21-17 less than 2 minutes into the second half. Mayfield was not rattled. They made a key 3rd down completion on when Arnett scrambled around the Beechwood end on a play where he looked about to be sacked. Then Arnett completed another lob ball down the sideline to Kennemore. Jeremy Burns almost stripped the ball from Kennemore but Kennemore hung onto the ball and then got away for a 34 yard scoring reception. Herndon's extra point made it 28-17 at the 6:56 mark. Beechwood had an odd series on their next possession. The offense moved across mid field, then a penalty got them off schedule. On a 4th and long from about the 35, Fieger looked to be sacked. However, a face mask penalty on the sack gave the Tigers a second chance on 4th down. Fieger gave Mayfield a dose of its own medicine when he lobbed a ball down the sideline to Brett Slusher, who made a nice catch along the sideline for a 24 yard TD. German's extra point was good and it was once again a one score game at 28-24 with 2:15 to go in the 3rd.

Beechwood's Casey Erdman intercepted a pass at about the 10 to stop the drive and prevent Mayfield from trying a field goal. Now Beechwood had the ball with a chance to take the lead. But the Tigers could not move the ball and for the first time on the night lined up in punt formation. Mayfield's coaches had once again clearly done their homework. Beechwood uses the rugby style punt and Slusher had run several fake punts for first downs going to his right. Mayfield loaded up their left side and showed Slusher there was no way they would let him do that to them. However, Slusher saw Mayfield had left only one defender on the other side and he sprinted past him for the first down. Surely this would be the play that would lead to the Tigers finally getting a lead. It was not to be. Marshall Bacon intercepted a pass and ran it 38 yards for a TD. Herndon's extra point made it 35-24 with just 9:01 to go. On Beechwood's next possession they fumbled along the sideline near midfield and Mayfield recovered. The Tigers were able to force a Mayfield punt. Beechwood moved the ball quickly downfield but failed on fourth down at the Mayfield 20. Mayfield was able to get another 2 3rd down conversions to hold onto the ball and run out the clock.

Landon Arnett was the key to victory for Mayfield. He was only 8-14 passing, but nearly every completion came on 3rd down plays. Lane Kennemore caught 4 passes for 154 yards and 2 TD's, including the 99 yarder. Marshall Bacon added 3 crucial catches for 83 yards and had the pick 6 in the 4th quarter that sealed the game for Mayfield. Beechwood handled Trajon Bright, limiting him to 75 yards on 26 carries with 35 of those yards coming on one run on the last drive of the game. Prior to that run he was averaging less than 2 yards per carry on the night.

 

For Beechwood, Ethan Stringer was having a big game before leaving with the concussion in the first half. Stringer had 16 carries for 91 yards. Joe Studer added 68 yards rushing and a TD run. Jeremy Burns caught 7 passes for 72 yards and a TD. Brett Slusher caught 2 passes for 39 yards and a TD, plus the fake punt run and numerous tackles for loss playing LB. Fieger was 11-20 for 135 yards and 2 TD's, but also had 2 interceptions that equaled the number of INT's he had thrown the entire season.

 

One final odd stat - Beechwood never punted the ball in the entire game (they did have the fake punt) and lost by 11. That is something you won't see very often.

Congrats Cardinals for bending but not breaking! Beechwood was as advertised. Very good football team and if a few more plays went their way the outcome could have been different. I was very surprised with Beechwood's ability to stop the run; defending the pass was very challenging for them and played a big role in the outcome of the game along w/the interceptions. After Mayfield scored on the pick 6, that was the game changer IMO.

Beechwood was good...the fans posting the hype on Beechwood didn't know what I know which was the heart of this Mayfield team and the refuse to lose mentality. This senior class has gone now to 4 straight State Championships. That is swagger that you can only get from being there. This team doesn't know lose. QB Arnett was excellent. Lane Kennemore....tough as nails and Marshall "pick six" Bacon ....big first downs ....this team doesn't quit. Our D stayed with a huge BW O line....Mayfield receivers got it done tonight. One more....

Beechwood did a great job tonight but had some trouble covering the pass wich has been a problem all year. Good luck to Mayfield next week in the State game.

Great prediction on the score. And you are right about it being "not as close as some may think"... I never thought Beechwood would dominate Mayfield like that at the line of scrimmage. Mayfield made the plays and Beechwood made the mistakes. This one definitely hurts the most because for the first time I left a Mayfield-Beechwood game feeling we were clearly the better team, and yet Beechwood still could not get the win.

 

Congratulations to the Cardinals. Good luck next week. Everyone may think I am crazy but I am sad to see them go. Despite no wins I have enjoyed the challenge and would love to see it continue. If we win a title in the next 4 years, it won't be as satisfying as it would have been beating Mayfield along the way.

VOR, I agree that this Tiger team had the more talented team, especially in the trenches. Not going to go as far as saying they were a better team though. Great teams find ways to win and take advantage of other teams miscues. Mayfield did that in this game. Honestly, from a sheer talent standpoint, McCracken, Caldwell and maybe even Graves and Murray had more or as much. It's impressive what the coaching staff has built at Mayfield. They have somehow instilled a refuse to lose attitude in those kids and the kids are like sponges, absorbing everything they hear and believing they're going to win every time they step on the field, regardless of the opposition. Even more impressive is that they don't get rattled when facing adversity. They just go to work and continue to try and execute to the best of there ability and somehow, it's worked more times than not. This is a very young Mayfield team that many thought may be a rebuilding type year, but, they've exceeded expectations. Someone forgot to tell them they aren't that good. I credit the coaching staff for instilling that confidence and swagger without being cocky. The best part is they should be even better the next couple of years. A lot of upcoming talent in the lower classes.
