^ I think those are very valid points. I also say Mayfield has more talent than you may be giving them credit for. Carman, Bright, McCampbell, Kennemore ... excellent top notch, talented players. Bacon, Hernandez ... talented, good players. There are more. Even #25 (don't know his name) making plays on special teams. There were two kickoff returns that were one tackle away from perhaps being returned all the way and #25 made nice tackles and plays that prevented the big play. At this point in the season, the young players know their job and the talent starts to show. Mayfield's players made more plays than Beechwood's. That is a statement on talent. I don't think this Beechwood team is more talented than Mayfield except on the line. Skill players - I may give it to Mayfield on the talent side.

Great prediction on the score. And you are right about it being "not as close as some may think"... I never thought Beechwood would dominate Mayfield like that at the line of scrimmage. Mayfield made the plays and Beechwood made the mistakes. This one definitely hurts the most because for the first time I left a Mayfield-Beechwood game feeling we were clearly the better team, and yet Beechwood still could not get the win.

Congratulations to the Cardinals. Good luck next week. Everyone may think I am crazy but I am sad to see them go. Despite no wins I have enjoyed the challenge and would love to see it continue. If we win a title in the next 4 years, it won't be as satisfying as it would have been beating Mayfield along the way.

A couple of ill-advised throws, a lost fumble, going to the well too often at the goal line, and some suspect pass coverage is not a good recipe to beat a team like Mayfield. Mayfield, like great teams do, took advantage of the BW miscues and made some gutsy, game changing plays along the way. Kudos to the Cards and good luck next week in BG. My observations from last night:

 

- I was sitting above the east end zone in the BW cafeteria looking down on the set Mayfield came out in at the 1/2 yard line. I saw the tailback lined up to the right of the QB but slightly in front of him. In no way did it look like a run play and the QB was in a shotgun. I said to another person that he was going to air it out because BW was in tight. I am wondering if the BW coaches had my angle if they would have changed their defensive set?

 

- I wished BW would have tried Stokes in the flank when they were 3rd and goal and 4th and goal. MF stuffed for the run and BW obliged.

 

- BW's run game continued to impress. Stringer has really found a groove and it was a shame to see him knocked out of the game and Studer was his usual self in running very hard.

 

- great line play by BW on both sides of the ball

 

- I continue to scratch my head on the kickoff strategy by BW but then again nobody is busting runbacks either. I guess it works unless you have a Joey Nussbaum type leg.

 

- BW should be poised for another run next year. They have the pieces in place at the skill positions providing they all come back to football for one more year. I will miss Mayfield. They have some great fans and I will challenge them to find an opponent like the Tigers in 2A. Well played Cards. You are still the best.

I thought it was awful! Give the team the ball on the 40 every possession? Nothing good about that

At the same time you have have to consider that BW wasn't wanting to chance it. Allowing a kickoff return with that speed could open up doors for MF. I thought it was pretty smart honestly. I rather give up decent field position then allow them to start in my territory or even score.

Any highlights from that website came directly from WLWT in Cincinnati and they were fairly brief. Fox Cincinnati had the better highlights of this game.

It sure would be nice if all the discussion about who was the better team were in this game thread instead of in the "Therapy" thread that is supposed to be about how Beechwood can improve.

I not so sure that the "better team" debate can be had....Beechwood handled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball all night, Beechwood was able to run the ball on a defense that doesn't allow the run. They controlled the Mayfield running game that know one else could do. The difference is that Mayfield made plays that Beechwood did not make. They had big play scores, they won the turn over battle and capitalized on Beechwood mistakes.

Mayfield is an awesome team, worthy of a State champion.....Beechwood did not play its best game and it cost them. Credit goes to Mayfield for making the plays when they had the chance.

Being a Beechwood fan, I am sad for the boys...however, the sun will come up tomorrow. Great year Tigers.

To add on to what this guy said, mayfield was number all year. They went into BW with a chance of losing this game. Oversized up front and gave up a ton of yards off of penalties all year long. It could have easy been one of those night were they gave up a few Td's and penalties and just rolled over and said maybe next year. These kids have thought state championship all year and that's what drove the to making past bw. Anything less then that is a failure.
