" Mayfield just executed more than BW" congrats to BW on a great season and a great turn around after the first few games. I honestly think those were by far the best two teams in 1A playing.

I agree with you both. I don't see MF having any issues this coming weekend.

I not so sure that the "better team" debate can be had....Beechwood handled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball all night, Beechwood was able to run the ball on a defense that doesn't allow the run. They controlled the Mayfield running game that know one else could do. The difference is that Mayfield made plays that Beechwood did not make. They had big play scores, they won the turn over battle and capitalized on Beechwood mistakes.

Mayfield is an awesome team, worthy of a State champion.....Beechwood did not play its best game and it cost them. Credit goes to Mayfield for making the plays when they had the chance.

Being a Beechwood fan, I am sad for the boys...however, the sun will come up tomorrow. Great year Tigers.

When you are getting beat in one area you capitalize on other areas. Thats what better teams do...sorry. Beechwood just wasn't the better team or I wouldn't have a hotel in Bowling Green this weekend.

Players making plays is what wins games...and generally the better team makes the most plays that wins games. Beechwood is a very good team but on the night they played Mayfield they got out played....plain and simple.

I understand that it hurts too lose when you feel like you have a really good shot at winning but, win you make such comments, it is a slight on your opponent.

 

Now here is what I see that is wrong with the Beechwood philosophy. I thought it was just in the coaches mind until I started reading some of these posts. The problem is, they are still set back in the 90's. They want to have a run first and throw only if needed type philosophy. That works if you have the lead and are working the clock, if you have the talent to cover the spread on defense. There is the problem. The Tigers were not able to defend the spread.

 

I will lay it out like this. Beechwood beat us at the line. They were more physical, much stronger and bigger for the most part as well. The Running backs were about even, with a slight edge to Mayfield, if the blocking worked. The kicking game was an edge in Mayfield's side. The coaching was a definite edge in Mayfield's side. The skill positions, were a definite edges in Mayfield's favor. So, if you take that, Mayfield had three areas in their favor. Beechwood had one. They were pretty well tied on the other.

 

Now, the comments about us taking advantage of the Tigers mistakes being the only reason we won, not true. We were on cruise control up by 11 until the snap gets fumbled by the punter allowing the Tigers to get it at our 4 yard line. This allowed the Tigers to make a game of it. Then we stonewall another drive on 4th down, by sacking the qb. The ref with the worst possible view point flags for a facemask. This allows the Tigers to continue a scoring drive. There is the second advantage off Mayfield mistakes to keep it a game. Had those 2 not resulted in touchdowns for the Tigers, this would have been a 25 point advantage instead of 11.

 

Every time the Tigers mounted a comeback, our boys found a way to stop the comeback and turn it in their favor. That is the mark of a great team and great coaching. So, if you want to hang your hat on being the better team, I will give you the fact that you were better up front. We were better every other place on the field.

I'm not in the what if game, I think the best team won. However, if you are going to play that with the muffed punt and the face mask all, then so can BW fans. What if the qb just throws that ball into the field house on the first possession instead of right to a MF kid? What if the refs get the call right on the goal line, when the BW running back clearly crossed the plane of the goal line (I was standing on the hill and thought so, and I have seen two pics that can confirm)? Lots of things happen in a game and all normally even out. Pointless argument from BW guy that insists best team lost, just as pointless for MF fan to argue it. 7-0, and all those rings should be all the respect you need, yet it still bothers you guys.

OK, no dog in this fight. Seeing both teams play this year, I thought that BW would win. They didn't play their best and Mayfield made them pay for mistakes. Mayfield made the plays to win. It doesn't matter who thinks their team is better, Mayfield moves on. End of story. Both schools have had great teams in the past and both have great teams this year. I wish these teams would play in the season since they won't be playing in the post season. It is usually a very competitive game and, as a fan of great football, always great to watch.

Some of you have replied using my posts as reference that I claim that the better team lost the game....Just for clarification purposes, I do not believe I ever made that claim. I have given Mayfield the credit for doing what they needed to do in order to win. Both teams are pretty evenly matched for the most part. They are IMO the best 2 teams in 1A.

I do not go back to the 90's with Beechwood, only the last 3 or 4 as far as following them closely. Mayfield has been the better team at times.....I do not buy in to the fact that this year they are clearly better as some like to say. This year it could have gone either way.

As far as the Frankfort comments....stemming from last year, They out played Beechwood physically and won the game, that was quite the environment for a game of that caliber. Most BW fans didn't expect what they got from Frankfort...which was a pounding. Yeah, throw in some questionable play calling and penalties...and the faithful made some excuses....none from me. Bottom line from last weeks game...as has been stated before...Mayfield made the plays to win the game, Beechwood did not.

This quote sums up why for a lot of the fans that this one is worse than the others but by this time next year BW fans will barely even recall this one with what they return and I honestly believe we have made BW stronger. We certainly forced the Tigers to modernize their offense which may still be a work in progress but its getting better each year. We learned the same lessons back in the mid 2000's and it made us who we are today.
