Does anyone know the game times and locations for the Small School Championship games on Saturday, Feb 28th. Seems like lots of confusion on the times. I was just looking for the 6th grade time, the 7th grade time, and the 8th grade times? Will the Girls games be played in between the Boys games like they were in the Big School divisions?

 

It seems like a lot of confusion because those running it are not being very clear.

Beechwood 6th won big over Tichenor in the small school tournament.

Newport 7th beat Ludlow 62 to 3...

Having seen the majority of the 7th grade teams play, it would have been nice to see the Newport team get a chance to play Highlands, Summit View, St. Pius, and Conner. Newport is very athletic, has arguably the best player in the region that can play any of the 5 spots on the floor, has a guard that can knock down jump shots, and other role players that rebound the ball, and guard you. Newport's pressure is good and they can turn you over in the back court, and run off quick spurts.

 

I know this will stir up some angst, but I think Newport would have been too quick for Pius and too athletic for the Highlands guards. And before someone tells me that the Highlands BIGS would have dominated the Newport inside players, be careful. Newport's inside guys are better than you think. I do think Newport would have matched up well with Conner and with Summit View, and those could have been great games. I think Summit View, Conner, and Newport were the most athletic teams that I saw across their roster. Athletic doesn't always translate to great basketball, but in this case, I think these 3 teams would have had some great games.

 

I see the value of the small schools playing each other - Ludlow, Bellevue, Dayton, Tichneor, etc., at this level, but really wish there was an exception process that would have allowed Newport to get to play these other teams. Their only option was to play in some tournaments, and it is a shame that the Newport administration didn't get them in some of those other tournaments.

Whole-heartedly agree, 100%. They can play.

The same thing could be said about Beechwood 6th. They are like 31-2 and their only 2 loses coming to Highlands in the Woodfill Tournament. Beechwood has beaten the large school runner up IHM twice this year. Next year this group of kids needs to play with the larger school divison. It does zero good to beat teams by 40pts almost every game!

Did the St Agnes tournament really make the BW 6th grade team forfeit because they wouldn't work around the Middle School tournament schedule? If so, that isn't a practical approach. But, BW is the best team in that tournament and playing from the losers bracket probably won't be an issue.

Unreal.....but, its their tournament, they can do what they want, I guess. They let an AAU team from Turners play in the 7th grade bracket. If I was a 6th grade BW player, I would be hoping to have a chance to play a St Agnes team in the loser's bracket. :puke:

You are correct. Sad, but that is exactly what a lot of these schools do with their tournaments: stack the brackets on one side and put themselves up against cupcakes (i.e. St. Therese Tournament 8th grade) so they are assured to be in the title game. The truth is, have some guts, but then it's' their tournament. Whatta ya gonna do?

I do not know the circumstances behind the Beechwood decision, so no comment.

 

However, after numerous years of sending teams from my school to this & many other tournaments, I can tell you these guys do a great job and typically go out of their way to accommodate teams & get all games played. Possibly there is a time crunch, knowing they have to get the tourney completed by this weekend. (2 & out) tourneys can be difficult. Also, lets not forget the weather over the past 7 days.

 

As far as stacking the brackets . . . not a thing with St. Agnes. They allow 6th grade A teams to play in tourney, while they play their blended school teams.

Beechwood 6th beat Dayton bad in the semi finals of the small school tournament tonight. Play Saturday in the finals probably against Bracken at Sharp..
