Would have liked to see how Newport 7th matched up to top 3 teams in big school league. I'm certain they will win small school.

I agree. How did Newport fair against them last year when the league wasn't divided? How does Newport matchup with beechwood?

I believe Gray Middle won the 8th Grade final over Woodland.

Wow, and Beechwood beat them in the Turkeyfoot tourney?

Highlands wins six grade championship, 51–33 over IHM. Hergott, Rom, Vinson all tourney for highlands, Vieth and Bessler for IHM.

The Highlands team is excellent. Would have liked to have seen BW get another crack at them...hopefully next year BW will be playing upper division in MS.

Not exact on his height. Close to 6'2? He plays for Skinner's team (I believe that Huddy is playing with them now as well. I know that he played in a couple of games for them) He is a basketball only kid. He is extremely athletic for how tall he is. IF he works on his post moves, he could be really good next year.

Agreed...Salter kid is a real talent...

Honest question. Can their Girls teams handle the big school division? The flaw in the system is that the entire program has to be in the same division due to the way schedules are done.

Watched the small school division match up between Beechwood and Newport last night. The 6th grade tigers won convincingly and yes versus some of the 7th grade wildcats, but we are talking about a good legitimate, could compete with any "Big" school division team, a very well rounded team(Beechwood). The 7th grade wildcats won the game though the score did not dictate the game, tigers got down big early and could never really get out the hole, but it was a good show from both teams and Coaches, Newport 7th stays undefeated. The 8th grade wildcats also won by a good margin and the game got somewhat a little heated at times, yet overall it was a good games to watch.

Nice comments on 6th and 7th grade games...to add on the 8th grade game:

I hate when refs take over games; but BW 8th graders and coach have to learn to "take it" from refs when getting rough calls. 3 Ts are unacceptable.

Last season Newport 7th beat Highlands by 3 in regular season then lost to them by 1 in district final. This year they beat Beechwood by at least 15 both games with starters out at 4th aquarter.

They are going to have to play the big girls in HS...the division is silly while KY has a "one champion" basketball system. That said, if one insists on it, play the small school regional the week before the bigs (instead of after) and give the small school champion (or champion and runner up) in each grade an invitation to the big school regional tourney.

Not hard to be sensible...just hasn't been in the first year of the division.

I believe the reason this has been done, the splitting of divisions, is because MS basketball SHOULD be very fundamental and discipline based. While Im not a huge proponent of it... I absolutely get it. Look at RA Jones as a prime example. Those teams were getting beat pretty badly last year and it's hard to constantly teach when your down 15-20+ per game. The kids also tend to lose focus and interest when constantly being beaten that way.

While I agree, that yes, they do play the "big girls" or boys in HS, this is giving these kids a chance to actually develop some skills. Beechwood and Newport may be the exception, but for RA, Tichenor, Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow, etc... this is probably a good thing. I know RA and Tichenor have had some solid years in the past, but overall they will probably compete better in the smaller school league.

Hopefully with the opportunity for those kids to develop, those high school teams will be able to better compete with the "big boys" at the HS level.

The catholic schools are getting ready to fight it out. Who you got?

Will the small school divison ever get their tournament in? Doesn't help that the 6th grade is at Bracken Co.

Thinking the same thing. 7th grade is at Sharp...

Does anyone know the game times and locations for the Small School Championship games on Saturday, Feb 28th. Seems like lots of confusion on the times. I was just looking for the 6th grade time, the 7th grade time, and the 8th grade times? Will the Girls games be played in between the Boys games like they were in the Big School divisions?

It is a disaster. I have seen three different brackets not due to weather but due to nobody getting the seeds correct. This third version is still incorrect but at this point it is becoming a nobody cares attitude. You would think the seeding would not have to go through this many revisions in a weeks time. I am hearing some teams going to pull out of this tourney due to constant changes in seeding and then also the issue of having to travel to Bracken and games changing daily due to weather, which is causing issues with getting all teams within a school district to various points in the area and having enough buses to do that. This 6th grade small school tourney is a mess!!!

Also, the new schedule has some teams playing two games in one night.
