You called it correctly... Gray vs. woodland .... Houston v rankin matchup should be a good one .....

Summit View vs. Highlands was a great matchup. Atmosphere was great for a middle school game. Fans were out in full effect for both sides, almost like a high school game. The place was buzzing! The boys played hard on both sides and Summits ability to contain the highlands guards played a major role in the game. Summit also did a nice job of rebounding for how big and strong the highlands bigs are.

 

It was fun to watch #34 (highlands) and #32 (summit) go at it. Those boys battled.

 

Kudos to highlands on a great season. Good luck to SV in the final.

Very good season for the HMS 7th grade. What were they 28-3 or something? The 6th grade team is 29-0 I believe and the 8th finished with a decent record and around 16 wins. The Birds Freshman are in the Semis of the Cov Catholic Tourney with a very good chance of beating St Henry again and making the finals. The Highlands program is 2-3 yrs away from some good things.

After thinking about this game a little, I really want to give props to the Summit View student section and the Prinicpal. They had to have 100 7th graders there, at least, cheering on their classmates. Painted faces, chants, and cheers. That was an awesome atmosphere. They even tried to storm the court until the Principal gave them the look and point, and that ended that that and they walked orderly over to the locker room to cheer with their team. Really neat. Stinks that our boys lost, but that's how it goes. Playing in a game like that will always be a good memory regardless of the outcome.

As for your post, NKyBFAST, #34 for HMS is Bryson Huddleston. Who is #32 for Summit? He is a competitor.

Have middle school teams of the recent past not had success as well? It is not until these kids become frosh going into sophomore year that things change because of fall sports. Granted things are quite differenct now than they were just 3 short years ago. Coach L has held the kids accountable for getting in the gym during downtime from other sports and the kids have bought in. Still need those basketball only kids to continue to work on their games so that the fall sport kids can become complimentary players which is how this program succeeded in the past.

6th: Highlands

7th: St. Pius

8th: Gray

Coach L has held the kids accountable for getting in the gym during downtime from other sports and the kids have bought in. Still need those basketball only kids to continue to work on their games so that the fall sport kids can become complimentary players which is how this program succeeded in the past.

 

I can speak only to the Highlands 6th grade team. This group is by far the most talented 1-7 that I have seen at Highlands in quite a long time. They can do it all shoot, handle, play pressure D etc. Their only downfall is that they are not very big. But what they don't have in size they makeup with heart and hustle. If this team along with the bigs from the 7th keep playing LOOK OUT!!

We have not seen teams like these winning 29 straight games or going 28-3. I also think there is a nice core of kids from the 6th/7th who are Basketball 1st type players which is what they need.

Wow. I will make sure my kid and his buddies get a good look at this. Mediocre and/or underachieving. I sure hope the high expectations that are being put on these 'young' middle school kids pans out for everyone involved. Curious to see how it goes.

Everybody has an opinion and mine included the teams even my son played on. Just telling it like it is. However, we all should be very cautious about predicting successfull HS programs over MS success. I am with you there.

2006 was the year they won the 8th Grade State Championship. Here is the boxscore of the final. I dont know if they even did a Regional Championship back then hence the reason they went downstate and played.

 

Highlands (28-6) 52 Sebastian (44-4) 50 (Championship)

Highlands coach Matt Stevens started the following lineup: 5-10 George Grote, 5-10 Stephen Kowolonek, 6-0 David Hogue, 5-5 Brandon Roller, and 5-2 Zach Lother. Sebastian coach Doug Noble countered with 6-2 Dakota Ritchie, 5-7 Travis Terry, 6-4 Cody Moore, 5-10 Jade Haddix, and 5-10 Nick Noble.

 

Highlands survived a furious rally to earn a 52-50 victory over Sebastian. Highlands led 40-30 early in the final quarter but Sebastian charged back to take a 49-48 lead. The score was tied 50-50 when Highland’s Zach Lother hit a shot in the lane with approximately 15 seconds remaining in the game to give his team a 52-50 lead.

 

George Grote led Highlands with 17 points. Zach Lother and Tyler Grubbs added nine points each. Nick Noble, Cody Moore, and Dakota Ritchie led Sebastian with 18, 15, and 11 points respectively.
