In 6th grade Highlands is the team to beat. Conner 6th was leading going into the 4th but played terrible down the stretch. The rotation for Conner is much better now and the team is playing better as a whole.

Conner 6th plays down at KBA next week...we'll see how they do against the Eastern KY teams who usually have hold backs on their team.

 

The regions will be fun to watch as 6th grade basketball goes...one bad game and your going home undefeated or not.

Conner 8th grade boys defeat Walton. This is the first loss for WV boys this year. Not sure how good this group is. They play a pretty light schedule from what i can see. Only team that they have played so far is Twenhofel. Any details on the game?

The fact that Ahlfeld has missed two games for the incompetence of an official really ticks me off. He hit a kids arm off his jersey who was holding him. That play happens all of the time on out of bounds plays. The ref was BEHIND the player holding the jersey and only saw Ahfeld's hand swing. He had no view of intent, contact, just saw an arm swing. That refs had let the game get out of hand well before that as Highlands and Summit View games have been known to do. He was grasping at straws trying to get ahold of it, but w/ 17 sec. to go he made that call.

Basically, yes. He was ejected for forcefully swinging at the kid's arm to get it off of his jersey. The whole game was rough, and Summit View's coach being in his ear the whole game as loudly as he could didn't help.

No, it was straight ejection. I was really confused by it. The ball was being inbounded and Summit View had their press set up. Highlands was inbounding the ball and the kid from Summit had his back to the official handing the ball to the Highlands inbounder. So, for visual purposes, the kid was between Ahfeld and the ref denying the inbound. His view at best was at 45 degrees, but actually less that that. Hunter tried to get lose, swung his arm, and straight ejection. I would have done the same thing as the Summit player and held his jersey a little, and I would have done the same as Hunter and hit his arm off to get free. From where the ref was, he could not have seen the jersey hold, or where Hunter made contact. I'm telling you, the ref was frazzled by the end of the game. This all went down w/ 17 sec to go in a 6pt game.

Are Conner & Pius the best 2 teams in the West? In the SMALL school 7th grade, will it come down to Newport & Beechwood? I feel bad for CC's player. He is a very tough kid. He fell over Salter trying to stop him on a fast break. He didn't scream or cry. He just went to the sideline with his bones visibly displaced. I wanted to scream for him. Hope that he can recover to play whichever Spring sport that he plays.

I have said it before I am new to the Middle school basketball scene here. Do the Small and big Division play in the same bracket in the end or how does it work?

 

Also Don't Sleep on RA Jones for the 8th grade small Divison. There 8-5 but beat Newport the other night and only lost to Beechwood by 3 with less than 20 seconds to go. Bracken county in the small is also impressive. Ra lost down there by 2 without there best player.

 

Ra has lost too.. Beechwood by 3, (I think Tichenor) Newport the first matchup, Camp Ernst first game of the year and Bracken by 2 and Ra had a few chances to win at the end.

 

Ra's 7th has looked good as well against everyone but Newport IMO.

 

6th grade season has been rough but they are making the necessary improvements down the final stretch. I have watched all there 6th grade games and a few of the 7th/8th games.

Highlands 7th beat Holmes by double digits and improve to 23-2.

 

Highlands 8th led by 6 at half and ended up losing 45-41 to Holmes.

So with the Highlands 6th grade team being undefeated and the 7th grade team at 22-2 the $1Million question is......will this success stay with them as they move onto HS? The 8th Grade team has some decent talent as well and it appears there is a nice combination of strong guards/Post Players as well as Wings in all 3 classes.

 

The answer to your question is: Doubtful. Not many other kids come to Highlands in High School (just the Highlands Middle School kids). Many of the other schools always stay a step or two ahead because they have more than one school providing the athletes to the high school teams. So great Highlands Middle School teams mostly don't translate into being the elite high school teams.

 

 

I think camelman is pretty accurate in his response. HMS boys teams have been very sucessul for quite a long time. The current senior and junior classes at HHS won over 75% of their HMS games. Not tranlating due to boys exiting program, and those playing football not having the time or committment to playing bball year round.

 

 

That said, there is a core, especially on the 7th grade level that will be bball only and that do play a lot of AAU. It seems like a long way off but maybe.......

Beechwood 6th won the St. Ignatius Tournament by 30 or so over the host school.The Tigers ran a 2 platoon system and didn't press the whole game. Congrats Tigers!!!!:ylsuper:

This explanation is incorrect. You have to be seeing this through highlands blue colored glasses. It all started on the play previous to the ejection. A Summit view player got a rebound over the boy from highlands, and the highlands player was then called for a reach in. The player was visibly upset as he slammed the ball on the floor (could have easily been a warning, maybe even a technical). Summit view proceeded to set up their press break, where they had 1 guy back. As the summit view player got back, the highlands player came to match up side by side and clearly hit the players arm. There was absolutely no grabbing of the jersey. Why would the SVMS player grab his opponents jersey on his own teams press break inbound? The official was directly behind the play and made the right call.

 

That being said, those two teams always play very physical games. This seems to be the highlands 7th grade MO, as I know things got a little rowdy vs. St. Pius as well, as they pounded on Mr. Maher all night.

 

Again, that said, Highlands is good enough to compete for a championship in 7th. They have disciplined guards and strong post play.

This is the most confusing description of an ejection I have ever read. The two descriptions don't even agree on which team was inbounding the ball much less what instigated the contact. Wish I would have been there to see the action myself.

I can assure you that summit view was inbounding the ball. Whether or not hitting a players arm is a clear excuse for ejection, I guess is up to the officials discretion. I'm assuming he thought the contact was of malice and had some sort of intent. I can't get into the thought process of the player, I can only describe the action. Nonetheless, in a middle school game, I believe it's important to teach players to control emotions as much as you can, certainly before entering HS where things can get really chippy. Maybe this was the refs intent, who knows. Hard fought game on both sides, HMS got the win.
