It is cool (except it looks like the ball is ready to pop out). Either way, that's impressive!

Highlands 8th beat Turkeyfoot last night by 18 I believe.

 

Thelen is a player, if he puts some weight on he will be a dominant player in the Region down the road. He already has explosiveness and is pretty skilled with the ball.

With 2 weeks to go in the regular season, I'd like to pool everyone's knowledge ... In the 6th grade, highlands hasn't lost or even been tested; are they the prohibitive favorite to win the region, possibly by double digits every game? If not, who challenges them?

 

In the 7th grade, again it is highlands that has been most impressive ... Their record stands at 23-2 I believe, with both losses being kind of flukey... Who challenges them in the tourney? Unfortunately, Campbell county suffered a serious blow when they lost their best player to an ugly wrist injury.

 

In the 8th grade, gray and Campbell county have the best records I think (gray has lost 3, CC has list 2 or 3) but there are a lot of teams that could sneak up and get hot .... If it was a horse race, and gray and CC were the "chalks", I think I'd take the field.

 

With no one keeping track of schedules or results, this forum provides the only status there is ... Hopefully we get some participation....

I can't speak much for the 8th grade public side,but I would have to think the parochial side is a 3 horse race between St Pius, IHM, and St Joe Cold Spring.

I don't see anyone beating the Birds at the 6th grade level. Conner and Woodland might challenge them a little. If Highlands only plays their top 6 or 7 against another teams top 6 or 7 they will win every game by double digits. The only team that has done that with playing their top kids was when Highlands and Beechwood played in the finals of the Woodfill Tournament. Too bad the Beechies aren't allowed to play up in the upper school division tournament. I think it would be another good game against the Birds.

Based on seeing these teams play, in the 6th grade Highlands is the best Large Division team; and Beechwood is the best Small Division school.

 

In 7th grade, I think Highlands has the best record, but I believe Summit View challenges Highlands (I know High has beat them a couple times already), and I believe that Conner has a really good team. Their big guy is much improved and Conner has the best pair of guards in 7th grade. I think Conner 's pressure will be a factor when they play. Add in Pius because they have a great player that affects the game on both ends and is a goto scorer when they need a bucket. Plus, Dick Maile is the best coach at this level. For the 7th Small Division, i believe Newport has the best group of players, and has the Best player in Jefferson. He makes all his teammates better and he is unguardable when he decides to take over a game. Now, Beechwood, on a good day, has kids that are capable of making 8+ 3pt buckets in a game. If they have a great shooting day, and don't lose their minds against New port's pressure, they have a chance.

 

I think 8th grade in both divisions is a toss up. A lot of similarly matched teams. It should be fun to watch.

St. Pius and IHM, yes. St. Joe Cold Spring, notta. They just aren't that good. They have Duffy though. Now St. Joe Crescent Springs is pretty good.

Looks like Conner's 7th grade boys team has won their first 2 "pool" games at the Kentucky State 7th Grade tournament in Lexington. Conner beat Scott County & Lincoln County. They were seeded #5 (based upon pt differential) in one of the 13 team regions. They will play again tonight. Looks like there were over 50 teams competing.

Beechwood 6th beats Ludlow 69-10 today. They didn't press and switched up all of their rotations.

Conner has won their 2 bracket games beating Madison Middle and then beating Knox Co. Now, they play at 930pm vs Crosby (#1 Seed in their region). If Conner wins this game, they will make the Elite 8 of the State Tournament. They have had a great run today.

 

For the record, they are the only NKY team that went down to play in this tournament.

Conner did lose in the "Sweet 16" but advanced to play in the "Gold" bracket on Sunday. They had a great run on Saturday, but lost their 4 game of the day. The "Gold" bracket is for all the teams that lost in the round of 16. So, the winner of the "Gold" bracket will be ranked 9th in the State.

This is a shame. More teams from NkY should go, or be able to go. If for no other reason than to expose these kids to the likes of competition they'll be facing in HS.

Agree...I would have liked to see how Highlands 6th Grade did in that tournament.

 

As far as 8th grade tournament goes I think Campbell County is the favorite based on their record and overall talent. Gray has the 2 bigs and if they play well at the same time it will be tough for anyone to beat them. Woodland has a very strong PG and also the Houston kid down low so they could pose problems but with Ohmer not playing with them they are not clear cut favorites. Holmes could be a darkhorse if they pressure Gray and Campbell Co guards and can shoot the ball from the outside on offense.

 

I haven't seen Highlands play exceptionally well or as a team the entire season so as much as I am pulling for them I am a realist and just don't see them winning the Tournament. I could be wrong though and things could come together as they have very good overall talent.
