Thank God for so many reasons that nothing serious came about this. Hate to think what would have happened if the Police have gotten there while they were wielding their "toys". Just read the "student athlete code of conduct" on weapons and these "kids" will not be suspended. The way it's written, weapon has to be deemed deadly, so I'm guessing the weapon won't be considered that. But how does a police officer know that? He or she doesn't. Really could have been a lot worse. IMO, they should forfeit any scholarship monies and have to re-pay the college the monies it has cost so far this school year to date. Be done this year and be re-evaluated next.It's time to get tough on this non-sense! Freaking grow up already!

I'm not really sure about that. I know some people at UK who did some pretty stupid things while I was there, and I don't really know of anyone being shown the door.

 

Have an aunt who is a professor at a different college. She's talked about having kids in class who've been charged with some pretty serious stuff (I think she had a bad incident with one of them and was telling some family members about him seriously disrupting a class with an outburst).

 

IMO, you have to screw up pretty bad to be expelled from a public school. I'd imagine it'd be on the level of convicted of a felony, doing something pretty extreme in a class full of people, threatening a professor or administrator, etc.

 

The only person I knew of who was kicked out had some legit medical issues and snapped out and threatened to kill a professor over a bad grade. The guy was in some classes I was in and apparently off his meds and had something serious going on like acute bipolar. Other than that, I can't really say I know of a single person being kicked out, and I know of some people who did some pretty stupid stuff on campus (even being arrested, etc.).

As for the campus being shut down thing, I'm sure that a report of someone seeing someone with a gun will do that, but I've also had a class in the Chem/Phys Building cancelled more than once because someone had called in a bomb threat (I'm thinking it was around midterms both times and kind of gave me the impression that someone obsessed with grades did it for some extra study time).

 

I'd also think there's been more than a few places go on lockdown for a suspicious backpack that turned out to be something someone had forgotten.

Now, with that said, if you are the players, you just have to be smarter than to go around campus (shooting?) guns that look realistic. Could have definitely wound up ending much worse. At the same time, I'll say that a "lockdown" can be something that's erring on the side of caution because of the times we're in and/or a knee-jerk reaction to what turns out to be a false alarm.

There is no way that a BB gun or air soft gun could be mistaken for a real gun. That just isn't happening. I have a BB gun and it sounds like a metallic thud when it shoots. I have a 10 year old neighbor who has an air soft gun and it is slightly different but not loud at all. There has to be more to the story or there is someone who completely overreacted when they reported this.

BB guns should not be allowed on campus and should be handled by the police in a manner as a weapon. It may be as some perceive as just BB guns but used in environments of poor judgement could harm someone possibly seriously. The sound of a BB gun versus other weapons to those incnicendenty not involved could cause concern. In terms of who has BB guns versus guns less harmful I would not speak for as the authorities will sort out those details. There are students who are working extremely hard taking challenging courses to achieve professional degrees and UK like any other college should be about education and the safety of all students FIRST. I wish the best of the luck to the young men involved and believe they deserve to overcome their por judgement and wish they learn from their experiences.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, but its a sad day in time when you can't play with an airsoft gun.. If they are that dangerous why not ban them instead of real guns that are regulated and serve a purpose.

I guess if your a good shot you could injure ones eyes. Other than that not much harm you could do with an airsoft gun.

Why was "it" loud enough? Could it be possible that other gunshots were being fired at around the same time? Airsoft/Paintball/Pellet guns don't make much noise. Not enough for anyone who has heard them and an actuall gun, to confuse one another.

Guns of all types are banned from UK's campus.

 

BUT, in 2012 the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that guns can be kept in a vehicle in such places as a glove box.

And yes, UK's weapons policy states you can be expelled, if the weapon is deemed capable of serious physical injury.

 

EKU and WKU even mentions such things as pellet guns.

I would like to hear what the caller who reported "shots fired" has to say as air pistols, BB guns etc. don't make loud noises. Maybe they saw them holding the guns and maybe even saw them shoot at something. The caller maybe didn't "hear" but "saw" and told the operator and the operator puts out the call "shots fired" but she didn't say they were loud shots??

 

I always say stupid kids doing stupid things and I'm just glad a campus cop didn't see them and start shooting at them.

 

I do agree that a one game suspension is a joke, especially when two of them don't even play. I say four games and some volunteer work and they should not be allowed on the field during the games. Let them sit at home in their dorm and not enjoy the primetime atmosphere this game will bring.

So this was just a case where some freshmen, feeling invincible, got a little out of hand and made a stupid decision. There is absolutely nothing about this that calls for expulsion. Yes, they need to be punished, as they are, but to call for expulsion is absolutely absurd. This may not be the popular opinion, but I also find fault with the two students who reported the incident and somehow thought an air soft gun sounded like a pistol. There is absolutely no way to confuse the sound of an air soft gun with the sound of a pistol. If it was by looks, then yeah, I can see how they may be confused. But not by sound.
