I think it was just poor judgement that got out of hand. Fleeing the area and stashing the BB guns made it worse. The only thing that confuses me is it made it sound like someone heard shots fired, but a bb gun doesn't make that type of sound.

 

I brought this question up in post #25 and all of a sudden it is being asked about on page 4 etc. lol. Sometimes I wonder if all my posts are ignored haha.

 

 

To answer the question and I saw HB20 asked the question if anyone has fired every air soft gun in the world and knows for a fact that it doesn't make a sound etc. I will say without a doubt, air soft guns along with bb guns do not make a sound like a gun in which gunpowder is used to expel the projectile.

 

The answer is no, neither air soft guns or bb guns make any type of sound that would confuse it for a real gun being fired. Air does not make a sound of a report. No explosion is created to create any sound that could be mistaken for, lets say, firing a .38 caliber handgun.

 

 

Now with that all cleared up, my opinion of what happened was this. Someone saw the kids with the handgun (couldn't possibly know what kind of gun it was in the darkness by just seeing it being held by someone) and they were shooting someting like a target or a tree etc. and although didn't hear a "gun shot" what they saw and what they thought were someone has a gun and is shooting and from there it become shots fired and the story grew.

 

My opinion.

 

 

Now with that said, yes it was stupid on all accounts and for all involved. The times we live in and all the incidents going on with not only terrorism, but also the gun incidents that have captured the nations headlines the last couple years as well as all the school shootings over the past 20 years, this was as stupid and dangerous an incident as one could be involved in on a school campus.

 

As I said earlier, they are very lucky a police officer wasn't walking by or driving by and seen them wielding a weapon because instead of a suspension, we could be talking about a funeral.

 

My opinion is also against expulsion. I really do think it was 4 kids who simply were not thinking. Yes they should know better, but guess what? They didn't think that far in advance and made a critical mistake. Whatever the school thinks the punishment should be I will stick behind. The school is setting a precedent for this type of incident and must live with it and use it in the future for cases that are similar (students with weapons on campus)

 

I really think the players will pay for this for years to come because of the reputation they now have. It's sad that something so avoidable will now haunt their college careers. Hopefully it is a lesson to all students that common sense goes a long way and who you become friends with in school can affect how others think of you.

Where I grew up every 10 year old boy had one. All of my boys had one or more, and there are tons of 10 year olds now that have them.

 

Do these guys need to recognize that what they did was stupid - Yes.

 

Should they recieve some kind of punishment - Yes. In these times anything that can be mistaken for a real weapon needs to be thought about very carefully. Heck there was recently a lock down over an umbrella.

Things are a lot different than the 70/80's sadly.

6 guys, late at night, with a "gun", some type of shot is fired, campus on lockdown, during these times? Sad thing is you know these players have been told, and hopefully warned, about staying out of this type of situation. Three games minimum.

I don't understand some of these viewpoints. Some say that they were just being kids, teens being teens, or boys being boys, that they were just being stupid or not thinking. But in the same breath the same people say that these fools are lucky that the police didn't see them walking around carrying or they may have been shot or killed? If you are doing something that you may get shot or killed by someone who may think the worse, you won't be able to convince me that what they were doing isn't a big deal, just teens being teens and were just stupid or not thinking.

 

I would hope that UK listens real hard to the parents who were worried sick that night not knowing what was going on during a campus wide lock down, which is way behind someone doing something stupid or not thinking.

 

As far as people wondering about the phone calls. We were not there, we did not hear it, but one member of BGP posted last night that he got a text from bis son saying that he heard "shots". As another BGP member asked, is there more to the story that people don't know about.

 

And again, UK bans all weapons that could cause death or serious physical injury, which these can be considered in that group. Only weapons allowed on campus by people other than officers are ones that are hidden away on such places as glove boxes. These people broke policy concerning weapons. It this was a non athlete, some random student, who was like most there and only a few people knew him, I find it hard to believe that people wouldn't be calling for UK to show him the door as they would be worried about their kids at UK. But since a lot of people know the ones involved, and they are athletes, they don't deserve expulsion?

For those who are blaming the callers. Yes, it sounds like some are shifting the blame to the callers. I think you may have missed this post from last night, as NO ONE has commented on it.

And I'm one of those parents that has a daughter at UK that received all those phone calls, texts, and emails from UK. And I'm thankful I know what's going on at UK and in the crazy world because of systems in place like these.

 

I think because of what "could" happened, a much more severe penalty should be enforced. One game is laughable and a joke. Hopefully we find out what the University says today about the whole childish in incident.

Guess these guys didnt know a guy just got killed in Ohio for carrying one of these around in a store. Could have ended badly. They should be suspended the rest of the season and lose their scholarship money for the year at a minimum. Would have no issue if UK expelled them either.

They should recieve a 3 game suspension, and some sort of school probation, for creating the disturbance that they created.

 

Amazing to me how many people think these guy's lives should be ruined over this, (I'm not saying you two do) but are willing to give people who commit real crimes multiple chances.

I pointed that out.. My kids elementary school they do lockdown drills and they brought some type of new state of the art device to fortify the doors. We live in a nice area but it doesn't matter in this day and age. 1 game suspension is offensive.
