So how does shots fired formulate from the "initial report".

 

For the record I find it hard to believe someone heard shots fired from a BB gun. Someone in my back yard could fire off a BB gun and it would go unheard. Again just trying to see this situation.

 

 

Same here. I'm trying to figure out why someone would report "shots fired" if no shots were heard. Yet, shots were heard but air soft pistols and BB guns don't make sounds like regular guns do. This is like 2+2=10

I received a text from my son when this first happened. He was in his dorm directly across from where it happened and heard the shots along with others who were in the common area. They all said it sounded like a small handgun.

An airsoft gun does not sound like a pistol... Could there be more to this than we know?

Someone in another thread said that the guns do make some kind of sound. It was in the thread where the camera man from COPS was shot and killed by a police officer who was shooting at a suspect. The suspect turned out to have had an airsoft gun. He pointed it at police and pulled the trigger and I wondered why they had returned fire when it was a pellet gun and didn't shoot bullets back at them. (Of course it could be that they thought it was jammed or he had the safety on as well) But I thought someone said that they do make some kind of noise. Maybe someone saw them with the gun and saw them shooting it and convinced themselves it was a real gun? With all the shootings in Lexington recently they should thank their lucky stars that the police did not arrive to find them brandishing those guns, it could have been very ugly.

As for the suspension: I'm fine with them being suspended whatever amount of games that the coach/school deems necessary. I don't think they should lose their scholarships over it unless they were using the guns to try and menace/rob someone with them. If they were out shooting them at each other then I chalk it up to being young and stupid--not malicious. We used to shoot at each other all the time with our BB guns growing up. I'm sure they didn't set out to put campus in lockdown. Now if they were using the guns to intimidate someone or to rob someone then by all means kick them out and prosecute them.

I have a son that is a student @ UK & received the alerts last night. I think 1 or 2 people thought they heard something & called police (as they should), With over 5,000 people living in the Kirwan/Blanding area, I couldn't help but think that if it was a serious incident more than 2 people would have called. As it turns out it was air-soft & BB guns. Could it have been worse....absolutely. Was it poor judgement.... absolutely. Certainly don't think it calls for being kicked out of school or criminal charges.

I am with you. I'd think more than 2 people would have called. In my days there was always a ton of people outside in that area. Seems like if it was a real gun there would have been more widespread panic as well.

Have you shot every air soft gun known to man? You weren't there...you don't know what it sounded like.

I cannot imagine and airsoft gun that sounds like a real gun. What causes the sound in a real gun? Isn't it the shell actually exploding?

No. Nowhere near that.

 

If it's plastic pellets, it'd take a good shot with one to break the skin and a paintball gun makes way more noise.
