What would the punishment be if there wasn't a lockdown and they only just for caught by the cops with the air soft gun? Do you punish based on the panic they created, or do you punish them soley on having the air soft gun? I'm torn

 

I would say nothing, because based on the way I read the school weapons policy, they weren't in violation.

The only punishment I am against for them is expulsion. That's asinine. I'm with any other form of punishment.

I'm moving on from it but to lock down a public university of this size and to suspend the people who did it 1 week is insane. They induced panic and could have been killed, as well as bystanders, depending on the LE or civilian response Luckily it worked out for everyone involved.

I think everyone agrees a one game suspension is not enough.

 

IMO They should lose 25-50% of the football season, should have to do some sort of service for the school, and probably some sort of service to the city since the police had to be called.

 

Personally I'm hoping that coach suspended them for this week while waiting for full info, and will add to it.

This is starting to get ugly on social media. People are calling for expulsion. I think it was 99% poor decision on the players part but I totally understand some of the parents comments about how scared they were when they were called by their kids on campus last night saying they were in lock down because of shots fired.

 

This could get uglier before all is said and done.

 

 

I think it was just poor judgement that got out of hand. Fleeing the area and stashing the BB guns made it worse. The only thing that confuses me is it made it sound like someone heard shots fired, but a bb gun doesn't make that type of sound.

My guess. They will be suspended for couple more games, they will have to do community service (whether that is on school grounds or whatever) They will also be punished such as having to clean up locker rooms etc. from the football team for awhile.

 

Thats my guess on the punishment that will arise from all of this.

Is it possible that someone shot real guns and these guys got caught at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong equipment. Everyone seems to be saying that the air soft guns shouldn't have been heard. Lexington is stupid nowadays and four people were shot over the weekend(all non fatal but still). Gunshots heard in Lexington isn't rare like it used to be.

 

Or maybe it is another case of witnesses thinking, hearing and seeing different things. Saw guys with BB guns=heard gunshots.

 

Airsoft guns do not make a loud noise. My boys used to play in the woods with them all of the time. There's no gun powder exploding inside of a capsle.

 

Punishment needs to go beyond football. They need to be doing something that robs them of their free time, be it community service or something.

I am against expulsion but IMO these players should be suspended from football for one year to give them some needed time to mature. They should take whatever punishment the University hands down for inducing panic/causing a lock down. Air soft guns may not be considered deadly weapons but to another student who many never have seen one, they can sure look like the real thing.

I have a son that is a student @ UK & received the alerts last night. I think 1 or 2 people thought they heard something & called police (as they should), With over 5,000 people living in the Kirwan/Blanding area, I couldn't help but think that if it was a serious incident more than 2 people would have called. As it turns out it was air-soft & BB guns. Could it have been worse....absolutely. Was it poor judgement.... absolutely. Certainly don't think it calls for being kicked out of school or criminal charges.

 

Wait, so they were in a room, with the door closed and somebody heard an airsoft gun? So they were not really out in public with this thing? Makes no sense something had to happen for someone to call this in. They ticked off the wrong person in their hall. I'm ok with the one game suspension and like I said, community service.

There is no way the witnesses could have confused an air soft gun w/ a real gun. I don't buy it. This report does not add up.

I gave an example of another student athlete, at a school different than UK, where a kid had a gun under lock and key on campus and was kicked off the team for the semester.

 

These examples of "when I was in school" and "10 year olds have BB guns" are disconnected for me. Tell the Mom in California whose kid was shot by a cop while he carried a BB gun about how they are just toys. Tell those at Virginia Tech about boys being boys. This is a different time. If 6 big dudes are walking around a dark campus carrying guns (and let's be honest, me and 90% of the population couldn't have identified them from any kind of distance), people are going to lose their minds.

 

Do I think their lives should be over as someone grandstanded? Clearly not.

Do I think they should be expelled? No.

Would I be for a suspension from all football activities and a zero-tolerance probation from the school through the fall semester? Yes. Anything less than that feels inadequate to me.

 

I don't know what anyone heard, don't really care, as it is, to me, immaterial to the main point which is people are going to freak out seeing dudes carrying guns at night on a college campus.

I pointed that out.. My kids elementary school they do lockdown drills and they brought some type of new state of the art device to fortify the doors. We live in a nice area but it doesn't matter in this day and age. 1 game suspension is offensive.

And in the 70's we had bomb threats at my elementary school and we also did bomb threat drills then....

Guess these guys didnt know a guy just got killed in Ohio for carrying one of these around in a store. Could have ended badly. They should be suspended the rest of the season and lose their scholarship money for the year at a minimum. Would have no issue if UK expelled them either.

I would not be surprised if they didn't know about the person in Ohio.
