If UK has a weapons ban on you having them on your person they should be.

What would the punishment be if there wasn't a lockdown and they only just for caught by the cops with the air soft gun? Do you punish based on the panic they created, or do you punish them soley on having the air soft gun? I'm torn

I don't understand some of these viewpoints. Some say that they were just being kids, teens being teens, or boys being boys, that they were just being stupid or not thinking. But in the same breath the same people say that these fools are lucky that the police didn't see them walking around carrying or they may have been shot or killed? If you are doing something that you may get shot or killed by someone who may think the worse, you won't be able to convince me that what they were doing isn't a big deal, just teens being teens and were just stupid or not thinking.

 

I would hope that UK listens real hard to the parents who were worried sick that night not knowing what was going on during a campus wide lock down, which is way behind someone doing something stupid or not thinking.

 

As far as people wondering about the phone calls. We were not there, we did not hear it, but one member of BGP posted last night that he got a text from bis son saying that he heard "shots". As another BGP member asked, is there more to the story that people don't know about.

 

And again, UK bans all weapons that could cause death or serious physical injury, which these can be considered in that group. Only weapons allowed on campus by people other than officers are ones that are hidden away on such places as glove boxes. These people broke policy concerning weapons. It this was a non athlete, some random student, who was like most there and only a few people knew him, I find it hard to believe that people wouldn't be calling for UK to show him the door as they would be worried about their kids at UK. But since a lot of people know the ones involved, and they are athletes, they don't deserve expulsion?

 

A regular student doesn't deserve expulsion nor would a regular student be expelled. I was a regular student who did worse than this was caught on campus and did not get expelled.

Completely agree. It's embarassing. The "they're just kids" and "well all did dumb things in college" bit is old, particularly in this area regarding kids like Pike and Barker. These guys should be leaders and have SO much talent, but don't understand (and never will in one of their cases) that they are held to a higher standard and it's their responsibility to stay out of situations like this.

 

My brother played D1 athletics, as you know, and now pro athletics. As part of that, he had to make choices to skip out on certain things his friends did, even if they seemed harmless because he knew what the consequences could be if something went wrong. If you can't handle that responsibility, then you shouldn't be representing your town, your school, state, etc.

The Fayette County attorney's office is reviewing the case to see if charges will be brought on the players for the incident. After they are finished they are turning the investigation over to UK Student Affairs.

 

Sounds to me like the only concrete form of discipline that has taken place is the one game suspension.

AR 6:6, Policy on Deadly Weapons (Approved by the Board of Trustees, 6/19/12)

 

This Administrative Regulation is revised to bring the University policy on deadly weapons into compliance with the Kentucky Supreme Court’s recent opinion in the case of Mitchell v. University of Kentucky. In accordance with the Mitchell decision, deadly weapons are allowed on University property in the following circumstances:

 

 

 

•Possession of a deadly weapon by a person licensed to carry a concealed deadly weapon, if the firearm or other deadly weapon is contained in a motor vehicle (private or University-owned) and is not removed from the vehicle;

 

 

•Possession of a deadly weapon if it is located in a non-University-owned motor vehicle and is kept in an enclosed container, compartment, or storage space installed as original equipment in the motor vehicle by its manufacturer, including but not limited to a glove compartment, center console, or seat pocket, regardless of whether said enclosed container, storage space, or compartment is locked, unlocked, or does not have a locking mechanism;

 

 

•Possession of a deadly weapon by persons who are specifically authorized by KRS 527.020 to carry concealed deadly weapons on or about their persons at all times and at all locations within the Commonwealth. Examples of such persons are: Commonwealth’s attorneys, judges of the Court of Justice, conservations officers of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, elected sheriffs, and peace officers from other jurisdictions. A complete listing of persons authorized to carry concealed deadly weapons within the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the conditions for which the carrying of the deadly weapon is authorized is found in KRS 527.020.

So does common sense. Once these weapons are deemed as "not deadly" then they will likely face further discipline from the school and some kind of community service for causing the lockdown. The only punishment I am against for them is expulsion. That's asinine. I'm with any other form of punishment.
