I think it means more to the schools who end a long streak, than it does for teams who are on a long streak. When Highlands streak was ended by Ryle, the HHS fans and players were more like "wow, it has been a long time since we have had the feeling of a lose, lets start a new streak next week" but for Ryle, the players, students and parents danced and celebrated on the field the likes you only see at state championship games. As a Highlands fan it was kind of neat to see how much it means to other teams to beat your team.

A lot of truth to this. The guys who played for the Louisville Holy Cross team that ended Trinity's streak always like to bring that game up with a joking smile and I don't blame them. When BG loses, I hope it is a KY school, not McCallie, TN so that since a pride can be felt by a KY team. That team deserves to be as proud as the BG players who were part of building that streak.

In the last 5 years Trinty is 34-10 vs Calpreps top 1000 programs. Over the same span Bowling Green is 17-2. Trinity is 30-2 vs KY 6A in that span. Bowling Green is 33-2 vs KY 5A.

BG is the "sexy pick" for this crown right now, as their run over the past few seasons has been exceptional.

 

Trinity is still the flag ship, and it would/will take a while for that to change, IMO.

Trinity and Highlands are the two programs that jump to mind...St. X as a third. BG and Mayfield get a ton of respect from me but they aren't in the same discussion yet.

Ohio has several schools that have been dominate over the last decade plus and that is why I said Moeller isn't the first school many think of when they think of Ohio. Colerain can be that as well as several others. Cleveland St Ignatious is who comes to mind for me.

Being from Northeast Ohio I can say that between St Ignatius, St Edward, and Cincy Moeller, those teams come to mind when I think of the predominate schools in Ohio football over many decades. Other schools have a group of kids come through and have good years, but those three are the most consistent over the years. For Kentucky to me its been Trinity, X, Male, Highlands and Bowling Green are the schools I heard of for football when I moved here. I have no idea what a flagship program is or how to define it, but those schools have the reputation of very good, consistent programs.

If Bowling Green breaks the streak, then they will will be the record holder and all others will be subnotes. A Streak is a Streak regardless of what your schedule looks like. Some schedules are tougher than others however, if the Streak is your ultimate goal, then schedule soft teams.... I do not think Bowling Green has scheduled "soft" teams to enable the streak!!!! Great point about BG's schedule. They have scheduled some very tough teams during this streak and should not be forgotten.

I'm trying to get a handle on what someone is defining as "flagship". Is it a definition of who the best team is regardless of class? The team that someone would point to as the preeminent in Kentucky football if describing to someone out of state? The best over a recent period of 5 years? I feel like we're seeing some uneven definitions of what we're talking about.

 

I personally felt BG was the best team in the state regardless of class last year. This year there'd be some teams I'd like to see them play to know that. They're damn good again of course. Their D might be the best in the state.

 

It is confusing and there are obviously a lot of different factors people are considering in their opinion.

They have an impressive streak. But zero wins against Highlands or Trinity during that streak. The streak started after those road blocks were removed. Could Bowling Green have beaten them too? Maybe some years, but no way they beat either of them in 2011.

 

Bowling Green would have slapped Highlands a new one in 2011. I would argue that the 2011 team was the best team of the streak era. Ask John Hardin about that team. The 2011 Highlands team saw Franklin-Simpson go up and down the field on them, they just couldn't finish drives.
