They originally didn't put lights in at Wooten because when they built the stadium the neighbors contested it and got their way. These days it's a matter of $$. They're currently in the process of fundraising for a number of campus improvements, incorporating major stadium renovations to include a new grandstand/pressbox and lights.

 

I was told that when Wooten was built that Covington Catholic did not have lights put in due to the expense. The possibility of adding lights at a later date was discussed. The neighbors had concerns about lights. The deal was that if Covington Catholic wanted to add lights that they would need to apply for a permit and that at that time the neighbors would have their say. Until the last year or so Covington Catholic has NEVER filed a permit or talked with neighbors about lights.

The bottom line is that Covington Catholic does not have lights because they chose not to pursue funding and a permit. The neighbors have not prevented Covington Catholic from having lights. The very first time Covington Catholic went though the process of getting permission to install lights was last year. And it was approved.

BTW, I am a huge supporter of them getting lights. I hated playing home games on Saturday afternoon.

I like it, gives everyone who is a high school sports "junkie" the opportunity to see an extra game on the weekend. I will say, the cool Saturday afternoon games in Park Hills is a great time. :thumb:

The notion of a football field without lights at a school the size of CovCath boggles the mind.

 

Does anyone have any info on which Kentucky high school fields are lightless?

I remember playing a JV game at CovCath as a sophomore. We played on a weeknight and them not having lights was a problem. They moved the game up an hour and only gave us 30 minutes to change and warmup because we had to get the game in before dark. I found it ridiculous that a program like CovCath didn't have lights. Had no idea until this thread the reasons behind it.

I think it will happen this decade. They will have lights and I bet the first game under the lights will be against Beechwood.

Well - technically, they already had a game under the lights there @ 3-4 years ago vs Beechwood using lights from Arts Rental. Packed house. Problem is that the stands aren't worthy of so many people and need to be replaced.

 

I see guys saying things like "how can a school the size of Cov Cath not have lights?" and I feel the need to remind people, this is not a public school nor public funded. All the dollars for these improvements to the stadium, lights etc, have to be raised privately. I should also note that Moeller, one of the best football programs in the nation, does not have its own stadium. They rent Lockland stadium - clear on the other side of town- for their home games.

NewCath, Holy Cross, Brossart no stadiums. Heck even Thomas More College had to rent fields for a few years and I don't believe they have lights
