Tony Stewart runs over Kevin Ward????????

Featured Replies

Nobody has said otherwise. Are you in the camp that it was a coincidence that the guy who wrecked him and that he reportedly has a rivalry with is the one who hit him when no one else hit him?

I am in the camp that if Ward stays with his car and waits for the track personnel to come to the scene that nothing happens.

That's you. I've followed Nascar since the 90s and Tony has always been the most volatile driver in this time period. I've stated already that Tony's past transgressions definitely play a part in my view of the events. His past won't be ignored by me.
You've never heard of Kurt Busch? Poor Ol' Tony doesn't hold a candle to Kurt...:)
But nahhhhh....Tony would never purposely hurt someone on the track. Nahhhhh, not Tony. He has no past to indicate that he is a hot head who can't control his emotions on the track. Nahhhhhhhh......

You cracked the case, Ward's buddy says Stewart was basically jealous because he couldn't beat Ward...That's why he killed him.

I don't think Stewart did wreck him, at least from what is shown on the video. You can see them come in front of the grand stand and they are several feet apart. As they go into the turn it doesn't appear to me that Stewart touched him. It looks like to me Ward just looses it and hits the wall. That could have easily flattened his tire. Maybe they traded paint prior to what his seen on the video but....

I went through some of this earlier ... but heck .. that was like 6 pages ago (still can't believe there is a thread this long in auto racing).

I have a good friend who was at the race in question .... and you bring up some very important points--here is his running order of what happened:

*On the front stretch--Stewart Hit Ward ... which caused Ward's tire to loose air (not super fast or super slow)

*They both proceed into turn 1 ... and make it to the entry of 2

*Coming off turn 2--Ward's tire was low on air

*Coming off turn 2--Stewart sticks to his line with the small exception of being a tiny bit loose (this is the part where it appears that Stewart could have hit Ward--but he did not hit him)

*Ward keeps his line coming out of 2--his tire was low enough for the rim to catch in the dirt--and spin around and cause the accident (My buddy says that he 100% believes that Ward was angry because of the hit on the front stretch that eventually led to his accident--which was a product of the first hit and the tire letting go--not Stewart hitting him coming out of 2).

*From there ... we know the rest.

There is one video I have seen where I could see some of the front stretch hit ... my buddy feels like that one was extremely intentional---just because Ward was racing Stewart pretty hard--not dirty--but hard.

Last point--coming from a person who has actually driven a sprint car ... I don't think Tony was trying to hit Ward. I do think he was trying to mess with Ward. I pointed out very early that sprint cars are usually pretty tight with steering .. and that you have to turn the wheel--point the wheels in the direction that you want to go ... and pop the gas a little bit.

With that said ... I still think Stewart is responsible. If he wouldn't have hit Ward on the front stretch ... chances are .. those two are fighting it out for the win (pure speculation--I know--but it wouldn't surprise me).

actually tiny is probably the one that Kurt Busch took lessons from.

I've followed Nascar for years. My sister lives next to Wendell Scott jr and has gotten me Hot Passes every year for a decade to the Brickyard which is the pass that gives you all

Access to everywhere which means I ate dinner with several teams and drivers in the area where all their trailers are etc. I watch the race in the actual pits with the drivers pit crews.

I have gotten autographs of every driver and car owners from Richard Petty to AJ Foyt. Every single driver has signed every year I went except for 1. Five times he has been approached by either myself or my brothers and not one time would he sign an autograph for anyone and that was Tony Stewart. I tell you this because he has always been known among fellow drivers as well as others associated with the sport as a royal butt munch. He has numerous times gotten into with drivers in the garage area. As I said earlier and agree with PP92 wholeheartedly with is he built this reputation and that is why many don't think he's completely innocent here. Right or wrong, he brought this in himself.

Yep. He and his brother Kyle would get this same scrutiny.

Keep reading. :D

LOL I saw that as soon as I went back to reading

Don't know if it has been mentioned but at least 3 dirt tracks set new rules Monday stating that a driver is to remain in their car until the emergency crew gets to them unless there is an emergency and they need to get out of the car.

To people saying there is no way Tony Stewart had enough time to think this through and it had to be unintentional to buzz the tower:

Do you think Ward wasn't also thinking in this situation? Don't you think he had a pretty good idea what these drivers can and can't see? Doesn't he at least have knowledge of how they drive and steer? Are we to believe he was so upset he was willing to risk his life to point at Stewart way before being run over and go way too far down the track? In the hypothetical posed earlier isn't it just as likely Ward thought he was far enough away to be at a safe distance until Stewart accelerated and steered? I find it harder to believe a guy that knows this circuit and these cars very well got too close by accident and that there is no way Stewart was trying to send a message.

And the fact that it's taken until now to institute this rule is absurd. Everyone these days is reactive and won't be proactive about things.

I went back again and reviewed the video from the start and what you have here isn't meshing with what I see on the video. Maybe I'm just missing something or not understanding.

You can see both Ward and Stewart going into turn 4 with Ward ahead of Stewart. They disappear from the video as they exit turn 4 onto the front straight away. When they re-enter the frame Ward is still ahead of Stewart but Stewart is moving up past him. It is clear they do not touch leading upto the crash. It can easily be assumed they did not touch in the time they were off video coming out of turn 4, Ward was in front through turn 4 and was in front coming back into frame with Stewart too far behind to have hit him. Could Stewart have hit Ward's rear left tire when existing turn 4, maybe but their placement coming back into the video suggests otherwise.

Now the part about the tire getting low and the rim catching the dirt. I will start by saying in the video the only tire you can see on Wards car that is flat is the right rear, which happened from hitting the wall. So if his left rear was low causing the wreck you can't tell from the video. So lets assume it was his left rear. You are confusing me by saying his rim dug into the dirt. That to me wouldn't cause him to slide up into the wall. When I think of his rim digging in I imagine the force of the car moving up the track and they force being stopped by the rim digging in, it has to go somewhere, so now they rim becomes a pivot point and the front end would jerk/spin towards the wall. If the same thing happened to his right rear he flips.

I am in the camp that if Ward stays with his car and waits for the track personnel to come to the scene that nothing happens.

He's arrived:

If Ward stays in his car nothing would have happened to him.

This would prevent most road rage situations in the world. Simple solution but it is not what happened.

If Stewart is found negligent, is his career done? Even if he is found to be completely in the clear, what does this do to his career? Could NASCAR ask him to quit? Will his sponsors continue monetary support? Does Haas split?
