Most of those were to search for drugs and SWAT was used because of there was supposed to be a heightened risk to officers due to the presences of weapons. In only 35% of the cases were ANY firearms found. SWAT teams are not being used for the purpose that they were originally intended.

So walking in on armed felons 35% of the time is a suitable risk for Law Enforcement to take on with just a couple of officers and no extra protection. I would rather police officers be prepared and supported every time with extra manpower and equipment than risk sending two guys to knock on a door 1 time unprepared for what they may come across.

Luckily for all involved even though he refused to put the gun down he didn't raise it or point it at the deputies. Two deputies several years ago in Jessamine Co went to serve papers on a man, he came out with a semi-auto rifle and killed both of them. Again they were just serving papers, not going to search for drugs.

This kid died and it is a shame. I am hopeful that the truth comes out and punishments are handed out if necessary. I do not know what happened. Neither do you. I do have some experience with people who are "eye witnesses" but do not tell the truth. All I know is that looting has happened, Black Panthers are preaching for violence against police officers and all protests are not peaceful.

That's lower than the % of US households that have guns in general. It is estimated that 39% of US households have guns. So should SWAT be used to serve every warrant?

But other officers need to make their voices heard, and the leadership, city/county/state officials and department heads need to be more open and go after these few bad apples, and not make excuses for them. Then, and only then, will the few bad cops or ignorant cops wake up and see that they can't hide anymore, that any wrong doing will be taken care of swiftly and at the fullest extent of the law.

Thanks for the reading. Did they refuse to leave? The account is completely one sided. I have a hard time believing the reporter was following direction and minding his own business and then was arrested for doing nothing. Maybe that did happen, I just have a hard time believing it.

 

I believe the police in Ferguson are in a tough situation. They do not know who is going to be peaceful and who is not. Who is a threat and who is not. There is no way to tell the difference.

 

I am not on a particular side. I tend to side with police in situations like this because it is their job maintain peace and order. You may be right that the militarization of the police may have made it worse. I don't know. I do know that if I am a police officer in that situation, I would want to be militarized. An angry crowd can get unruly very quickly and this crowd has proven that.
