Doesn't justify him being dead if in fact the officer shot without reason or acted out of the letter of law, BUT....it's comical to me how you hear exclamations that "He was a good boy. Never hurt anybody. Just walking home" when in fact, he may be well and nice, but he wasn't a complete innocent here. And there are two sides to every story, and it's possible his actions directly led to the end result.

 

This occurs in MANY situations similar to this one, and isn't just segmented towards one group. It seems as though anytime any young adult makes a mistake or error in judgment and they're "young" we excuse them or rationalize things. If it leads to a situation like this (See this case OR the Brockman situation) I respect people more who say "He may have been wrong and he may have done something that caused the police to stop him, but I'd still like to see where the investigation leads because I don't feel Mike Brown was a threat at the point that he was fatally wounded."

 

I believe that african american men are profiled a bit more, especially in certain areas. But in Ferguson, with a 70% population of african americans, it's hard to really say the police single out that group. Isn't it possible the officer went off the description given of the offender and recognized that Mike Brown fit the characteristics provided by the eye witnesses? He pulls over, asks him if he can ask a question or says whatever he said, and then everything goes off from there?

 

Again, doesn't excuse officer's actions if he took it further than it needed to go (if M. Brown was hands up in air when he was fatally shot) BUT let's not forget that this entire thing only happened due to the victim's own actions. Unlikely that officer stopped him if he hadn't just physically abused a guy and robbed a convenience store. If I were the officer, I'd go into the situation assuming the person is violent as well and don't blame him a bit if he wasn't sweet and nice at first or had his hand on his weapon in case. I guess I'm just very tired of all of the excuses made for young adults. I knew at a young age, if a cop says stop you do it, you certainly don't attack him, and you certainly don't rob and steal.

Does anybody else find the #Iftheygunnedmedown on twitter a little bit comical? I cannot for the life of me find a picture that makes me look like a criminal.

 

I realize the purpose, but whatever is posted on FB, Twitter, instagram, etc. is free game. If a person is gunned down after committing a crime, why would the media publish a photo of that person smiling at graduation.

Police release still pictures from security cameras in the store. It shows Brown in a physical confrontation with the worker. Worker said Brown was stealing Swisher Sweets and he tried to stop him. He called the police. So the police were on the lookout for Brown.

 

Now that by itself tells us nothing about what happened when the police stopped him. However, it does take away the "for no reason" angle.

Saw the actual video. It was described as 'strong-armed' robbery. I guess that means they were caught 'shoplifting' and confronted but the store clerk is just pushed away as the two go out the door. There was a big size difference.

Indeed. There aren't any headlines that read Police Officer assaulted by robber he was looking for that tried to steal his gun so he shot him. He may have acted wrongly and gunned him down while his hands were raised, but so far the kid that was with him's story has some holes.

Update: Listened to the chief's presser and he says the officer who shot Brown was not aware of Brown being a suspect for the incident at the store. Chief says the officer engaged Brown because Brown and his friend were walking in the middle of the street.

 

The video of the incident from the store shows that Brown is a pure punk. That , though , gives us no indication of whether he did anything wrong and deserved to be shot.

 

It does, though, make us think a bit differently about what POTENTIALLY happened. It goes to his character.

IMO it really hurts his credibility seeing as he is a suspect in a robbery which is the reason it would appear the police confronted them.

While we do not know that's what happened the actions shown in the video certainly make that a realistic possibility.
