Tony Dungy: I wouldn’t have taken Michael Sam

Featured Replies

If I felt he was good enough I would have signed him and just rolled my eyes knowing what is coming as a media circus and the level of criticism I would take if he bombed.

I just hope those who support Sams are realistic in noting that he will not get much playing time early on if ever and not attach the Rams management if he gets little if any playing time.

Let's also be real here. Michael Sam is NOT the first gay NFL player. He's the first OUT NFL player, but he's not the first GAY NFL player.

Our generation seems to have this thing where we think we're the best and most progressive, but Dave Kopay and others were gay, in the closet, just didn't think it a big enough deal to come out and/or were too afraid of the backlash that would come from their coming out in a different era.

Here's a guy who was homosexual, was a good teammate, and wasn't a media circus during his playing days. That's the older days. Guys strapped on their helmets and pads, went to work, and tried to win as a team... no individuals.... just 1 team.

Vince Lombardi would have been proud of Jason Collins - ESPN New York

A media circus with a 7th round guy with reporters asking me all sorts of questions mostly not related to football? Nope, no way I take him. 2nd round talent that falls to me in the 7th round? Yep, then I take a flyer on him and put up with the media circus because I believe he can help my team. 90+% of 7th rounder's don't help a team. The SMART thing to have done would have been to not draft him...probably no one else was either...and give him a quiet free agent try out if you ACTUALLY think he had a chance to make the roster and be productive. Then if he wasn't good enough and you send him on his way, it's not such big news.

Come on. Sams is a marginal player at best. Robinson was one of the top talents of the Negro Leagues.

Oh come on. Dude was defensive player of the year in the top league in the country. Dude deserves a shot.

It's a lose/lose for the Rams. If he can't play' date=' and he's a marginal guy, and they cut him the release will be national headlines. Hundreds of guys get cut because of talent level but this one will be like Tebow getting cut. Paging Josina. Paging Josina. Please report to Rams training camp.[/quote']

Well the Broncos and Pats got rid of Jesus and survived.

So, are you saying that the devil is now in camp with the Rams?

If Tony Dungy had been managing the Brooklyn Dodgers, would Jackie Robinson ever have played?

Jackie Robinson wasn't a marginal baseball player who had a poor combine.

Very few teams and staffs can handle the attention that will come with Michael Sam. That being said, I think Jeff Fischer is a coach that can handle the attention.

Saying I think the Rams will survive Sams departure when and if if happens.

I think it would have been very interesting to see what would happen if the Rams did not draft him and he was free to sign with any team.

Would teams try to sign him because he was Defensive Player of the Year and there is no pressure of having drafted him?

Would teams still not want to put up with the media attention even if he was just an undrafted guy trying to make a team?

It might have even worked out better for Sam football-wise like it does for some undrafted players.

Dungy's stance is donkey doo. He backed Michael Vick coming back into the league, and he was going to cause major distractions.

Would teams try to sign him because he was Defensive Player of the Year and there is no pressure of having drafted?

This scenario might play out a second time if Sam has to pass through waivers to make it to Rams' practice squad.

I don't think this will be as big of a media circus as some believe.

Working in Sam's favor is that Fischer likes to go with nine defensive linemen rather than eight.

There will be more media time devoted to Sam than there should be but that is to be expected. Because he is a 7th round pick it will seem like a circus. I hope he is good enough to make the team. If he isn't then it will be a circus.

Agreed.
