How many High Schools have Mascot names that should be changed?

I can understand some of the changes to an extent, but some of this stuff is just nuts. However, I think Holmes Bulldogs need to change their logo because the dog looks too mean and it scares me. Newport Central Catholic should change the Thoroughbred because every time I look at their helmets I want to run down to the nearest horse track and make a bet. I think Dayton should change their Greendevils to Red, I mean whoever heard of a green devil? Highlands needs to change the Bluebird if for any reason other than it's not mean enough! And Villa Madonna needs to change the Blue Lightning, isn't that a alcoholic drink? Notre Dame Pandas, Cooper Jaguars, Bellevue Tigers, aren't these animals all endangered? Come on! Exactly where will this stuff end?

Isn't Robertson County (Deming) the Demons?

I believe Williamstown is also the Demons.

If the can of worms is going to be opened, you probably have to also take a look at those schools who are Rebels too, don't you? (I'm thinking of especially those that may have their team logo involve the Confederate flag.)

I'm pretty sure Boone County used to have the confederate flag, but that was removed many years ago.

I remember being a junior or senior in high school and there was talks of changing from Rebels to Beavers. I wasn't thrilled with that idea.

How about the Scott Eagles? Aren't they still protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act? Don't want to tick off the environmentalists.

(sarcasm strongly intended)

NONE!

I'm offended by horses. :lol2:

JCPS has already gone PC to an extent.

Shawnee from Indians to Eagles

Seneca from Redskins to Red Hawks

Iroquois is still the Raiders but their logo went from being native American based to being a wolf. Haven't got the logic of that one figured out.

We still have the Atherton Rebels (civil War connotations) but it's only a matter of time.

This is what bothers me about the furor over Indian-based names. So, "Indian" or "Warrior" is no good, but you keep Seneca and Iroquois and Shawnee? I don't get it?

If a school is the Warriors, this should be their new mascot IMO

You can be Rebels without using the Confederate flag so I don't think any of them should ever change. For instance, Boyle County is black and gold, which is hardly Civil War-ish. Casey County is light blue and red, which might seem like confederate colors, but so long as they aren't flying the old battle flag in the gym, I've got no qualm with "Rebels."

I believe several schools have already dropped the presence of the Confederate flag...but, what about a man dressed in the southern grays? I've seen a couple that have gone that route, and there's really no mistaking what era they're pulling from?

I know most of what you're saying is tongue in cheek, but it's not exactly a fair comparison, and kind of trivializes a whole race by comparing a potentially offensive nickname with traditional animal nicknames. People are only talking about nicknames that are considered offensive in racial aspects. That being said, as a Native American, I'm not offended by any of the typical nicknames...Braves, Warriors, etc. Redskin doesn't bother me, (although I've never been called a Redskin), and Indian is a term that is a misnomer (Columbus screwed that one up, thinking he had landed in the Indian Ocean), so I can see where some might be offended by those.

It's kind of strange though, Native Americans are the only race that faces this issue with so many teams that use Native American tribes, images, or characters as mascots.

Being alumni from one of the changed schools I can say this subject never was an issue at all - at least in the 1970s. In fact, it was treated as honoring the native Americans - not demeaning them. But the Redskin name is definitely slang and is probably not the best. The other two are really confusing. what is wrong with 'Indians' or 'Raiders'. The schools themselves are named after specfic tribes. It seems completely silly to not have the mascot be a native American related figure or group or nickname.

If anything I would expect that there would be concern that these schools do use specific tribe names - probably without the 'expressed written consent' (using copyright terminology) of the tribes themselves. If they have gone to this extent to be PC maybe they should examine if they have run afoul of the namesake tribes in using their names for the schools themselves.

The only thing I can tell you is the term "Indian" is a complete misnomer, and not recognized by many Native Americans. Indian is not a term any tribe identifies with and was came about because Columbus thought he was in a different place. And there is a lot of negative history associated with the term "Indian". Most were rather be identified with the official name of their tribe, as the tribes native to this country are incredibly diverse....many cultures, languages, customs etc. Indian (and even Native American) are terms of oversimplification of what is really a diverse ethnicity. And again, none of them really bother me, or most of my family.

My high school mascot was a gopher. I thought it should be changed because it was goofy; not because it was offensive.

You were the only one who felt that way. Nobody else would gopher that.

And as I've often said - if I was a Georgetown (OH) Lady G-Man, I'd strongly lobby for a change. I've never seen the mascot, but it has to be conflicted at best, hideous (Brad from State Farm) at worst.
