Madisonville is the Maroons as well.

Who gets to decide what's is offensive? Do you eliminate the Devils (Russell and Dayton)?

 

Owensboro's mascot is Red Devils.

I always thought a maroon was something Bugs Bunny called an intellectually impaired individual.

If a school is the Warriors, this should be their new mascot IMO

Wow, I had no idea that's what a Maroon was. Learn something everyday. Definitely one that should be changed. I Googled it and the first definition on Wikipedia and Merriam Webster's Dictionary was just what you'd said.

I can understand some of the changes to an extent, but some of this stuff is just nuts. However, I think Holmes Bulldogs need to change their logo because the dog looks too mean and it scares me. Newport Central Catholic should change the Thoroughbred because every time I look at their helmets I want to run down to the nearest horse track and make a bet. I think Dayton should change their Greendevils to Red, I mean whoever heard of a green devil? Highlands needs to change the Bluebird if for any reason other than it's not mean enough! And Villa Madonna needs to change the Blue Lightning, isn't that a alcoholic drink? Notre Dame Pandas, Cooper Jaguars, Bellevue Tigers, aren't these animals all endangered? Come on! Exactly where will this stuff end?

Some which don't really come up often but could be seen as offensive would be 'Mountaineers' or even 'Cowboys' (to a lesser extent).

 

I'd guess that being associated with a guy in a coonskin cap, buckskin clothing, and carrying a rifle isn't really appealing to everyone in those areas (I'm guessing some West Virginians could have a fair point on how they personally feel the image only furthers negative stereotypes associated with their culture).

 

Some 'Cowboys' are worse than others. Oklahoma State's "Pistol Pete" isn't really the most PC mascot if we're going to really scrub them out. Texas Tech has already has experience changing their mascot. "Raider Red" is a Yosemite Sam clone with double pistols pointed in the air who peers through thick facial hair and an oversized gaucho hat. The Red Raiders use this when their "The Masked Rider" mascot wasn't allowed or was deemed inappropriate.

To be fair, I think "Maroon" in the sense that Pulaski and Madisonville use it has more to do with "marooning", or the act of leaving a threat behind, i.e. what pirates did to mutineers. Prior to adopting the name "Colonels", EKU was also the Maroons, although I think their nickname had more to do with the pre-existing school colors.

The only thing I can tell you is the term "Indian" is a complete misnomer, and not recognized by many Native Americans. Indian is not a term any tribe identifies with and was came about because Columbus thought he was in a different place. And there is a lot of negative history associated with the term "Indian". Most were rather be identified with the official name of their tribe, as the tribes native to this country are incredibly diverse....many cultures, languages, customs etc. Indian (and even Native American) are terms of oversimplification of what is really a diverse ethnicity. And again, none of them really bother me, or most of my family.

It sounds like the term 'Indian' is viewed not to differently than 'Redskin'. I not sure to have an opinion on 'Raider'. Its context may be akin to savages just slight differently since certainly during the conflicts of the 1700s there were 'raids' by the the Native Americans and Europeans. So I could see a problem with that.

 

Are the other terms viewed without negative light - Braves, Warriors?

 

Also, should any entity at least attempt to get permission to use the specific tribes name? I do think of these almost as 'copyrighted terms'. I think it was an excellent idea of Louisville to name parks after specific tribes and the nearby schools the same way. But, looking back, I do not recall specific learning about the namesake of the school. There was no attempt to raise this understanding of the tribes beyond what was it the standard history books.

That's what I was thinking. PC's logo even has a pirate flag as part of it, if I remember correctly.
