Wrong. Native Americans do not get an automatic free ride. They have to apply for scholarships or pay their own way just like anyone else. Many tribes do have money to pay for college that only tribe members can get, but it is awarded on merit just like any other scholarship. This is one of those myths that a lot of people somehow believe.

I have always understood it that if you have all the other components: academics, service, letters of recommendation, etc...like ALL students applying for any scholarships would have, PLUS you can somehow show/prove a Native American Heritage connection, that sets you up for additional scholarships that others are not eligible for.

And I think you're missing my point;-). I understand what you're saying....I just don't think it came across as to how you meant it in the way the post was structured. As far as there being too much PC, I don't know. I certainly don't think it's gotten to the length that you described. I know terms like "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and other similar things are often brought up as being too politically correct. The reason why the term PC has come to light, isn't such a negative reason. It's become somewhat necessary due to the sheer diversity of folks that call this country home. Once we all recognize that there are a lot of people (in fact many,many) that have came from different races, cultures, and backgrounds, etc, then PC really doesn't seem so negative.

 

Disagree. But as I said, we'll agree to disagree here. Some folks want to see black and some folks want to see white. On SOME things there are those who are too touchy nowadays. They take things WAY too serious all the time.

This is correct. Many tribes (not all) do have scholarship funds that are only available to bona fide tribe members. These scholarships are typically very competitive, and even when you are lucky enough to get one, they for the most part do not cover all costs associated with going to college (meaning they aren't free rides). These scholarships are no different than any other scholarship....there are plenty of scholarships out there that are only available to certain groups (ie women, company provided to children of employees, etc, etc). There are also some federal programs designed specifically for Native Americans. The catch here however, is you have to be in a Federally recognized tripe, of which there are only about 500, which only represents about half of the actual Native Americans that live in this country. For example, my tribe is state recognized (The Lenape tribe of Delaware), but not federally recognized. Most of these tribes are in Alaska, California and Oklahoma (with Arizona, and Washington have quite a few tribes as well). You also have the American Indian College Fund which gives out about 5500 grants every year, totaling about $4.2 million (on average each award is worth about $700). Now there are a few states/universities that do provide free or reduced tuition to Native Americans, and that list can be found here FinAid | Other Types of Aid | Native American Students

I went through this process myself 25 years ago, and more recently with my daughter. Neither one of us actually received any aid strictly because of our heritage. The VAST majority of Native Americans are paying their own way or receiving traditional aid.

None. High schools should spend more time teaching young Americans the importance of the U.S. Constitution to their future and less time worrying about political correctness. If the student, faculty, administration, and taxpayers who support a school find a mascot offensive, then they should rally support for changing the name.

 

If the proponents of a name change are in the minority and fail to persuade enough support to affect the change that they seek, then they should have two choices: get mad and leave or get mad and stay. Our First Amendment rights are far more important than the fragile feelings of any individual or group.

Try zero. I would say that almost 25% of my students claim to be "part Cherokee" or whatever. So I respond with something along the lines of "IF you can somehow prove your ancestry and trace it to a specific tribe, then you can go to college for free." I know they have no proof of tribal membership and probably have no idea if they are cherokee or not, but I always thought that my statement was accurate.

 

On a side note, in 2003 I qualified for a 300 dollar grant at NKU because I am 25% lebanese, been oppressed by the white man and finally got my do. :clap:

 

On another side note I played basketball at Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, ill. and our mascot was the "Preacher" I always thought it would be cooler to call ourselves the Lincoln Christian University Golden Calves or maybe even the Lincoln Christian University Gods. My suggestion did not make it too far up the totem pole.

What do you mean by "our"?? This country is just for you and your buddies and folks like you and everyone else should just leave?? Because differing cultures, beliefs, etc aren't good enough or don't matter. That's not what this country was founded on, but I'll consider your advice, cause hey, only your beliefs and attitudes are important. Or maybe I'll just continue to contribute to society like I always have (as do many other minorities) working in my community, coaching youth sports, etc.

 

Sorry but this country is diverse, and there a lot of different cultures present that live and contribute here. That's what's great about the US. Sorry if that bothers you or interferes with your way of life.

I don't always agree with the PC, but some of these minorities were the original Americans. I think if schools were respectful in the way that they represent their mascot some of the issues wouldn't exist. (ex. Chief Wahoo) Then again there are school like this one ADC Fights to Change ?Arab? High School Mascot - ABC 8NEWS - WRIC | Richmond, Virginia News & Weather that should know better.

Genetically, we are 99.9% similar, and 85% of DNA variances are within an individual group rather than between groups. So, if an interstellar visitor took samples, we would ALL be put in the same lot. Maybe this can change our thinking.
