Things have changed...I can assure you that 10 years ago a roughing the kicker flag would have been thrown...

All Matney would do is decline the offsides and the ball would never move. You could continue to jump offsides.

 

Yes you could....But can you decline a unnecessary roughness penalty after the whistle has blown? See the pattern here. He is really penalizing his kids here in the end and not helping them. Someone will get hurt before this is all over with at the expense of Jim Matney.....I knew from the 1st time I saw him coach in 1998 at Sheldon Clark that we wouldn't see the last of him. That was a interesting night to say the least. I can still remember him saying in a post game interview that he was in that game. Really? This was even after Jared and Co. threw up 35 on him in the 1st quarter. What he has done thought is simply amazing at both schools. I'm assuming he left Sheldon Clark in a better situation then we he found it. I know Johnson Central is better! I know one thing, I guess he only plans on coaching HS football the rest of his life because aint no College going to chance hiring his traveling circus.

AS I said before, would Haywood or Mueller pull these antics. That is why no one has respect for him I am guessing.

In all seriousness though, why not just kick on a down other than fourth? Get the ball where you want it, take a knee and kick there and this isn't the same issue that it is now.

I'm suggesting that Matney set his prize kicker up for such retaliation. Props to the other coach for having some class.

Matney should be reprimanded by his school and apologize to the other team for his antics.

The one thing that would work here is the fact there was a running clock. So during the dance of encroachment vs. declining penalties the clock is running non-stop..eventually the clock will strike zero.

 

As for the game in 1998 I was there.. Sheldon Clark actually did compete with Highlands pretty well comparative to other teams that loaded squad faced. SC was never truly "in the game" as he said, but they did make it interesting for a little bit...nonetheless by the time the 4th Quarter rolled around Highlands did have subs in the game.

 

Sheldon Clark pulled perhaps Matney's single most signature win of his career the week before when they beat Belfry 16-15. Belfry had spanked SC earlier that year in the regular season. I am going to start a thread about it right now as part of the "Remember When" series. Belfry was ready to host Highlands and it would have been the firts and only time Highlands would have seen a Belfry team running the spread.

I never said anything about hurting a kid. I wonder why I cut Johnson Central every chance I get?

If you are the parent of a kid on the team, do you talk to the coach?

 

What if you are worried about other teams perceiving the acts as a lack of sportsmanship and retaliating?
