Gotcha. That kind of changes my analysis of it then.

Other than team stat's how many records have been set against good teams, and how many against weak ones. The way I see it if I were a coach I would be mad at my self instead of being mad at another coach for wanting to help a kid.

To be honest, this "antic" doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others. Good Lord, if the kid made a 60 yard field goal, it's blooming impressive and I don't think I care how the ball got to the needed LOS. I also don't see it as the embarrassment to the other team that others (including people I really respect) on here do. It would bother me if the defenders hadn't rushed, but rather stood aside and let the kicker have all the time he wanted on the kick. Not sure why (other than it was Matney) people are upset with the fact a ball carrier ran backwards to get the ball to the necessary LOS.

 

I'm not sure Matney didn't do it with the hope it would cause the uproar that it has on here. I hear that Jim likes playing the "everyone hates JC" card and the "we don't get any respect" card to motivate his players. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Something like this plays into that hand. Almost Dudley-esque.

It doesn't bother me nearly as much now that I know they weren't driving, then just reversed course. I thought it was a situation where they were driving down, got the ball into the red zone, had a kid off the bench that wasn't going to be someone who accumulated a lot of stats take the ball and run back to center it.

 

If they aren't going to have many more blowouts this year and/or the weather will factor into the kick, it makes it even more understandable. Would I have done the same thing myself? Probably not.

 

Do I think it's a huge deal that it went down like it did? Not really as much as others now that I know what I do, but the 30 yard run back is a little much at the same time. The score was so lopsided that their were probably better opportunities for this to be attempted.

As someone who knows the man better than anyone on here not from JC I will say that I doubt that played into his reasoning for doing this.

 

He does play the underdog card often in interviews and presumably with his kids as a motivational tactic, but I don't see him making game decisions in the heat of the moment for that purpose. Jim Matney is maybe the most competitive person I know, on top of that he is an extremely emotional person. His coaches with that passion and emotion, and while I think that is a good thing, I also think that it is probably the one thing may contribute more to him doing things at times that are perceived as unethical and unsportsmanlike.

 

I shake my head at some of the things he does and says as a coach and I wouldn't even try to defend him for them. Jim Matney, the coach, brings that stuff on himself.

 

The thing I will defend is Jim Matney the man. I am fortunate to be able to separate the two and I can attest that the public perception of Coach Matney may be warranted but it is not indicative of the man I call my friend. I know him off the field and the truth is Jim is a really good man and friend. He is really loved by his players past and present. He is a players coach. Jim has always been exceptionally good to me from the time I played for him and then it continued when he moved on to coach at two of Belfry's rivals in Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central. A lot of you are making assumptions about him personally based on a very limited exposure to him, which I understand because that is your only exposure to him.

 

Of course, I have never coached against him, in which case I might would want to strangle him. I know some coaches who probably fall into that category.

 

Ultimately, Jim is a good guy to hang out with and talk football with, he is the type of guy who would help you out if you were in need, and I am happy to call him my friend. But I wouldn't want him to coach at my school.

No problem Toots. Like you said, you know the man better, much better, than I do.

Jim Matney was my sons coach and as for me also he is a players coach. He was always good to his boys .And what I saw every day at practice and away from school ,he was always there for them. Thats why these kids want to play for him. And if I had another son I would make sure he played for him at any school he may be.
