Is Simon Kenton building one of the top programs in KY?

Here's a question I always have.

Should every game on the (non-district) schedule be a potential or even probable loss?

I don't think so. However, if you're building a top program it should be something that challenges your team.

I think if you're trying to make your record look as glamorous as possible, no. But if you're truly tuning for the playoffs I say yes.

Top NKY programs CCH, HHS, NCC, BWD

SK is sitting there with Ryle, Dixie, Conner, Cooper and CC.

Not a top NKY program at all.

Essentially, most on here believe you have to win state titles or have a history of winning titles to be considered an elite program. Therefore, Central was not elite until 6 classes, but now they are elite. Considering the FACT that it is considerably harder to win a 6A title than it is to win any other title in the state, what does a 6A school need to do to be elite?

I personally think a 6A team in NKY must be able to beat Highlands and CovCath to be considered elite. Those 2 are year in and year out, the class of NKY. That said, a 6A school could beat NewCath, Highlands, Beechwood and CovCath every single year, still not win a state title and most on here would still not consider them elite. :deadhorse:

Depends. If you are building a program, you need wins. As the program builds you can schedule better competition and at a certain point the program will sustain itself and wins won't be what sells seats.

That's more of a personal preference. My preference would be that everyone of them should challenge you...regardless of win or lose. Non-district games really mean nothing, so why not use them as live scrimmages to better your team. Putting a team on the schedule for a "feel good" win is useless in my opinion. I'm not saying fill your schedules with Trinity's and Moeller's either, if you are a smaller school because then you start to wear down if you don't have the depth. But every game should at least challenge you. I say it should be at least and even match and I would prefer my team to even be an underdog most of the time.

You need meaningful wins. At the end of the day, "good" won't be determined on whether your record looks good. Eventually, even the kids figure that out. If you have kids on the fence on what to do, they will determine whether there is excitement in the program by "who" you're beating, not how many wins you have. Younger kids, maybe they see the wins. But kids that are just a few years out from contibuting, they will see right through that. They know if you aren't beating anyone, that you're in "the pack" with everyone else. And those younger kids will eventually see the same thing. But if you are making deep runs against good opponents and playing HHS and Cov cath and competing, kids will want to play. You have to compete with the best or you're just fooling yourself. If may work for a short time, but not over time.

shouldn't you have to win before you are a top program?

I believe that Racke will get the call at QB next year and Marksberry is already looking for the next guy at the 7th/8th grade level that can take over after Cameron graduates.

Yes, SK does year round training for FB. Not as extensive as it could be but a program does exist.

I think what's hurt SK in that area(weightlifting) has always been losing some of it's players to the basketball program, most schools deal with that. But also losing a decent number of their guys to the wrestling program which is usually pretty good even at the state level. When you have guys trying to cut weight for wrestling instead of trying pack on 15 lbs of muscle for next year I think it definitely plays a part. With that said I do know wrestling has helped some of those big ole boys with their speed and agility. Truth is the more SK continues to grow the more the sports will continue to improve because the competition level is on the rise in Independence.

wont happen.....SK wont schedule guaranteed losses!:D

Highlands and CovCath would lose!

I agree with several on here. First, I think it's terrific to see NKY teams starting to make comebacks. It was lost for awhile. We (NKY) used to be strong across the board. Not just one or two teams, every district was a battle and whoever got out of the district usually made a deep run. When I played in the 80's, 3A was loaded in NKY. Whoever won up here was pretty much State champs! In my time, HHS, Conner, Newport and Cov Cath all won state titles. Again, whoever made it out of NKY, won state...and pretty easily. I love seeing SK, Camp Co, Conner and others on the right track. There are several others that are doing the right things now too. Back in the day, (yes I went to HHS), but I took pride in the fact that NKY football overall was very good.

Now with that said, I do think it's time for some of these programs to step up their scheduling. I look at SK (and not knocking them at all, but it's their thread), but to not have Cov Cath or HHS on your schedule is not doing you any favors. And you have two 2A schools on there. First, I truly believe in putting together the toughest schedule possible to challenge and test your team. It will pay off. Secondly, if you ever want respect as a program, you have to show you can compete with the top programs. You don't always have to win, just compete and not be afraid to compete. No one cares what your overall record is if you didn't play good teams. I'd rather be 5-5 going into playoffs, but know I've been tested. It will pay off! If not, you run into games like SK did in Scott Co. They came away from that game thinking they were unbelievable and HHS fans felt they were very average. I'm not tooting horns here, I'm just being honest. And I'm only using SK as an example. Not trying to drill them at all. You can almost place any 6A and 5A school in place of them. But I do like the fact that Camp Co is stepping it up, Cooper seems to be on the right track (hopefully they can sustain it). Will Conner be able to still thrive after the their stud leaves. I love that Boone and Ryle have new coaches with new ways of doing things. Hopefully they will be on their way up again. We need this in NKY!

I agree RCC.....when you know you have to deal with Trinity, St X and Scott county you have to put one or two of those schools CCH and HHS on your schedule. It can only help. Uk fan sounds like he has a lot of pull at SK...get r dun UK fan!:D

SK 23 Collins 21

Old Scott County became New Scott County by paying teams they knew they could beat a healthy bounty to come to Georgetown 2 years in a row and get their brains beat in. There are many ways to skin a cat.

Collins is alot better this year. But Highlands got scored on by Ryle. SK shutout Ryle!

Blah Blah Blah........always an opening on the schedule until SK is on it you have no argument. Somebody doesnt want to play them...You want to claim to be the best you have to beat the best. Make no mistake I think SK is a good team and I hope they win but your fantasy world in Independence is awesome.

It depends on the program and your goals. In general though, a solid 6A program should not have a single game that is a sure win. At 6A, you should have the roster depth to schedule competitively every week.

I think they are headed in right direction. A long way from a championship due to the gap being so big from the Privates to the rest. But They should be right up there with the 6a teams that go deep each year.
