In 2009, SK probably had the best 6A non-X, Male, Trinity team I have ever seen. IMO, they had a great chance at winning a State title that year and if they would have played X twice, they would have beaten them once. Otherwise, 'mythical' public school titles are impossible to claim considering the public schools on the other side of the bracket were getting knocked out of the playoffs by the private schools. The funny thing about the mythical title is that it was the creation of Bob Redman at Male. During his time at Male, they were as 'private' as Trinity and X when it came to getting the best football players in JCPS to go to Male.

That's your problem RCC9, not mine. I am not a SK fan, I'm from Lexington and I remember back in Marksberry's early years teams would regularly put running clocks on them. I am stating facts. Simon Kenton has been the #4 program in 6a the last 4 years.

 

Top teams in the state win their own district. They didn't last year and then upset the district champs in the playoffs.

But are they one of the top programs in KY (as the title states), not even close. And I'm not one that believes you have to win a ton of titles to prove that. Yes they help, but when you have Trinity and X in your way every year, titles aren't going to add up. But to be considered one of the top programs in the state, you have to be able to compete with the other top programs or again, you're just the best of the rest. 2011 can be attributed to injuries and youth- primarily at QB. Keep in mind that Kuntz wasn't supposed to be the QB that year, should have been Tanner Norton (before he transferred to Brossart to pursue baseball full time). All programs go through that to some extent. As you can see, they rebounded well last year and this year. The question will be whether we can continue without the 'valleys'.

you won't find many SK fans saying anything bad about T/X or even FTH. Heck, I'm jealous of them and not afraid to admit it. They win consistently. We're not ready, as I've said, to be mentioned in the same class with those guys YET. Working on it. Give coach some time. He's getting us there.

Of the teams you listed, how many have been to regional finals in that time period? Cambell? No. Dixie? No. Lex Cath? No. Conner? No Cooper? No. It goes on and on. Facts are that SK is improving and has been one of the better teams in the state over the last 5 or 6 years.

It doesn't bother me at all. But I'm a realist. The title asks, are they building one of the top programs in the state. The answer is not even close and my posts are to justify it. I said in another post, I don't care how many state championships a program has. I don't judge on that. If they are competing with the top programs consistently, I don't care if they ever win a state because they do have to go through X and T. But to be considered A TOP PROGRAM IN THE STATE you have to compete with the other top programs and eventually beat one of them. There are two top programs right in their back yard and they don't even put them on the schedule. They didn't even have two of the best 5A teams on their schedule last year from up here. They want to be a 6A powerhouse! It's really comical to even have this discussion! Doesn't matter if I'm a hhs fan or not! I've already said, I hope they do become a powerhouse, but they are nowhere close yet.

 

Top programs play tough schedules consistently, they win their share of games year after year (winning records regardless of circumstances), they make deep runs and only lose to other top programs (in close games), they win their district more than not, they seek out competition, they challenge themselves, they schedule teams that can make them better (especially when they are 6A and say they have a desire to be great). You show me why they should be considered one of the top teams (other than they made a couple nice runs in the playoffs playing bad teams with great draws). It has nothing to do with HHS. I give respect to many other programs and I will give it to SK when they earn it! Beat someboby good (not even great...just one time) and then get back to me.

I am not even close to putting them in that category. They haven't even scored against Trinity yet for crying out loud.

Cooper did play in the state finals last year. And you're right, those teams didn't make it to the regional finals in their divisions and still would have beat SK. That's my point! Most of them lost to THE TOP PROGRAMS IN THE STATE! And you're right, Camp Co and Dixie made is nowhere near the regional finals were nowhere near good enough to and SK lost to them. And once SK got to that game, what happened? They finally played a decent team.

 

Agreed and have said many times...they are improving. But I guess our perceptions of what a BEST PROGRAM IN THE STATE differs. For me, that would be like the top 5-10. I would put SK (as a program) possibly in the top 20. Because to be considered a top program in the state, I would go back further than 4 years to probably at least 10 years. And even if we still only went back 4 years, the 2011 year (program wise) really would hurt them. There are several teams that have had a great 4 year run...and I don't just mean state titles.

The question is "Is SK building one of the top programs in the state" not are they one of the top programs in the state. Only time will tell. It takes good planning, good athelets, good feeder programs, good training program and one of the most important good fan support. When you have these things in place then you start building and making decisions for the future.
