Is Simon Kenton building one of the top programs in KY?

Again, 4 out of the last 5 regional championship games for SK with the schedule as is. Are you thinking playing Highlands or Cov Cath puts SK over the hump vs. Scott Co/Trinity or X? I'd argue no. We're not ready to compete with those 3 teams YET. Coach is building us for that chance in the future (platoon, as an example) but not now.

T or X, maybe not. But Scott Co, yes! If you would continue to use X in your scrimmage and play HHS and Cov Cath YOY, you would be able to compete with SC. When you expose your program to programs we mentioned, your kids eventually want to beat them and do what it takes to get there. And the exposure you get to seeing that type of team, speed, athleticism, discipline, etc, you can't match with playing any other teams up here. So it might take awhile to get to X (which would be the next step), but you're never going to make it if your don't consistently play against that type of talent level. Its always going to be a shock to the kids when they take the field with that type of talent and they will be defeated within the first qtr. When kids are used to seeing those things (becuase they have been consistently challenged), it is not as much of an impact on game day. They know what to expect and they aren't overwhelmed by talent, speed and athleticism. They settle down and focus on their responsibilities and winning the game.

The Neers are not in Kansas or 1A football snake.

I still believe to be consider a top program you have to win titles, be it state, district or regional. And to be honest, I really don't know enough about SK to even know how their program is developing.

You can build a top program from 1A...but it's unusual

SC has been better than SK due to the number of athletes they can put on the field. We could play the NFC West and it wouldn't matter in games vs. T/X/SC because we're not able to match up athlete/athlete with them YET.

I am going to add another angle to this discussion. SK has done a very good job building the program and getting kids on the roster. I see next year as a big year for SK. The challenge ... who is their next QB? Are they going to put Racke in at QB as a sophomore? I assume yes. The success SK has experienced is because of the QB's - Lawrence and Kuntz. SK always has kids with size. They usually have enough players with speed to handle the skill positions adequately. It all comes down to the QB. If Racke can step in and get it done, then SK should continue their successful run.

To get over the top though, I agree with NKY Bandit above ... they need to find/develop more high quality athletes, especially at the skill positions. I always feel like they have solid guys but no one that you call "stud". I don't know how they do that, but the teams they are trying to catch have those guys, and they don't IMO. They need another "Miles Simpson like" or two. X and T have those guys every year.

So are you saying that as a 6A program with desires of becoming a top program, replacing the 2A schools with HHS and Cov Cath wouldn't help at all? It really makes no difference to me. I'm just pointing out the fact that if you truly want to get better, you have to play the best. And if you really want respect as a program, you must play the best teams possible. I don't care if it's HHS and Cov Cath, but not a 6A school playing even most 3A schools. Even if they are good in their own division. That doesn't mean they will consistently produce the athletes to challenge a 6A school...that should be wanting to challenge themselves. Again, not hating on SK at all. Just saying they have to start believing they can compete with the big boys or they never will. Playing 2 and 3A schools will not do that for you as a 6A program. Just my opinion.

Racke and Heflin will battle for the starting QB next year.

Does SK have year round weight training for its players? If not, that is a good way to make progress as well. I would think that they already do have year round training. The challenge is how to make it better and more effective. You can never push to hard to achieve your ultimate goal...

Who do we have to beat to be a 'top team in NKY'? We've beat state champs recently. We've beaten everybody that we should (and lost some we shouldn't have (ie Dixie last year). The mark of improving is beating who you should beat and not losing to those you shouldn't lose to. SK is almost there. In NKY, the only team than can say they are 'elite' is FTH. Everyone else is either trending up or down and SK is clearly trending upward.

Top NKY programs CCH, HHS, NCC, BWD

SK is sitting there with Ryle, Dixie, Conner, Cooper and CC.

Not a top NKY program at all.

HHS 47 Collins 0

SK 23 Collins 21:D

Collins is alot better this year. But Highlands got scored on by Ryle. SK shutout Ryle!

^ On the SK schedule, I have no problem with them keeping New Cath on there. Keeping Holy Cross on the schedule deserves all the ridicule it gets. I like them adding Collins to the schedule. That is a nice add. Bullittt Central, I question that one. How is that game going to help SK win a championship? SK did improve the schedule slightly for this two year contract, but they should have done more.

I imagine they do, they have top shelf facilities.

I believe that Racke will get the call at QB next year and Marksberry is already looking for the next guy at the 7th/8th grade level that can take over after Cameron graduates.

Yes, SK does year round training for FB. Not as extensive as it could be but a program does exist.

Here's a question I always have.

Should every game on the (non-district) schedule be a potential or even probable loss?

Watch for Gangwish unless he plays just baseball. He plays for South Kenton right now. I believe he is a 6th or 7th grader throws a 70mph fastball.
