Is Simon Kenton building one of the top programs in KY?

Light years? Come on...

Yep, light years. We're talking about a school 1 season away from a 2-9 record who last year had a third of its wins against one and two A competition and was pasted by the one really good team they played about 100 to 7 in two games. That's building a top program? Not.

hmmmm heres a stat for you.

State Championship appearances since 2008

SK=1

Beechwood = 1

I think what's hurt SK in that area(weightlifting) has always been losing some of it's players to the basketball program, most schools deal with that. But also losing a decent number of their guys to the wrestling program which is usually pretty good even at the state level. When you have guys trying to cut weight for wrestling instead of trying pack on 15 lbs of muscle for next year I think it definitely plays a part. With that said I do know wrestling has helped some of those big ole boys with their speed and agility. Truth is the more SK continues to grow the more the sports will continue to improve because the competition level is on the rise in Independence.

You'd be surprised at how little weight cutting goes on, especially at the heavier weights. From my experience, a lot of the cutting goes on at smaller weights, and even that isn't as much as you would think.

State titles overall?

Every team has its good and bad runs.

Dont disagree, but one could argue Beechwood is fairing about the same as SK in the recent past, just saying.

Who mentioned Beechwood? I love how you have such a burr in your butt about Beechwood that you have to do that in just about every post. Whatever happened to you, get the over it!

75 center made a point that SK was Light years ahead of Beechwood. I was only making a point that Beechwood and SK have been to the same amount of State title games in the last 5 years. I did not knock Beechwood in any way.

When was the last time Bwd went 2-9?

No idea, considering the district they play in, I doubt anytime in the recent past.

Thread answer is still no. You don't follow a two win season with a weak schedule that pumps up the wins against much smaller schools, get destroyed in your only two wins against top competition and say your building a top program.

Yes, because BW doesn't play any strong programs outside of our district. They just coast through season after season never scheduling any real out-of-district competition.

For the record, I believe they are certainly headed in a positive direction. Of course, I also agree with 75 in that they just had came off a 2 and 9 record 2 seasons ago. Let's not go putting them in the Top 5. They may be in the Top 5 right now, but how about they stay there for at least two consecutive years before we go putting the "Top Program" moniker on them.

I think the 2 win season was a bite the bullet year where they went total two platoon to build for the future. Looking at their numbers on their rosters it seems to be working.

Coming off a two win season, who should they have scheduled if they are trying to build something? I know, T, X, HHS, and CCH, that would have brought the players out of the wood work to play. Getting beat by a great schedule does zero to get kids to come out and play, and will only hurt unless you have a proven track record. Plus, it is not like they have push over games in their district, outside of the T, X, Manual, and Male, it is the toughest 6A district in the state. Heck it might be the second toughest district in the state in any class.

IMO, they have been smart about getting kids to come out and generating excitement in their community. Right now, they have over 60 players on their Frosh and for the most part are two platooning at that level. I think they are on the right path.

Wasn't SK the one of the top challengers to Highlands during the late 90s Lorenzen/Smith era. Seems I remember them trading TDs in one game and Highlands struggling to put them away. Meanwhile Highlands was beating everyone else by 60 or more. I guess point is Rome isn't built in a day and it is hard to sustain long-term success.
