McDole didn't want to play football. It wouldn't have had any effect at all. I will say this, though. He had a Division I body, and would have been the best receiver that NewCath had had since Jacobs.

I know this.."lil Murph" was a Baseball player par excellente. Basketball #2...anything else he wanted #3 and a top flight student to boot! My point was to back-up the fact that "bloodline" does not entirely rule when a kid goes to NCC.

Actually today is the first time I have even visited this thread.

Speaking strictly for myself individually, and not as a rep of BBHS or the BBHS basketball program, I am very torn on the subject.

 

I really want to see us do what is right, but question the timing of the decision, and the fact that we are going to start at the JV level.

 

We presently field championship caliber fall and winter sports programs - Championship Soccer, Championship Cross-Country, Championship Basketball, and Championship Golf. With our enrollment holding steady at 420 and our next development phase not yet in the works, I question if the timing is right to jump into football. I also question whether this decision is being made in the best interests of Brossart High School, its student body, and its present athletic programs OR the special interests of a few individuals who have students attending Brossart who would like to see them provided with a football program in which to play. Cannibilization of our present championship caliber athletic programs is my primary concern.

 

In other words, is the tail wagging the dog??? Has the proper study/feasibility work really been done, and are we in a postion personel-wise, facility-wise, and financially-wise to operate a first-class football program that will become an asset to our school and a matter of pride and not a detriment. It seems to me that we are really rushing into this, but then again perhaps it is long overdue and is blatantly obvious to those responsible for making this decision.

 

The administration sees increased enrollment, but I question the caliber of athlete that we will be getting in the formative years from the grade schools. IMO, the kids who are capable of competing/contributing at the varsity level will still seek out established, successful programs in which to compete until we establish ourselves as being competitive and offer a similar product to that offered by our rivals. However, multi-sport athletes might now take advantage of the new opportunity to play football as well as compete in championship caliber basketball/baseball programs.

 

I will say that the sooner potential footballers from our district feeder parishes rally around it and commit to it, the sooner and more successful it will become. I personally would be flooding our feeder schools with Mustang football jerseys and mini-footballs with our logo emblazoned upon them as a first-step to generating interest in our new endeavor - that's me. How we promote Brossart Football in our feeders is going to be directly relative to how quickly and successfully we become. A build it and they will come approach won't work, because I doubt that potential varsity caliber players will flock to Brossart on the come, there is simply too much established competition out there. A clear and distinct Brossart football program roadmap will need to be established to sway them.

 

We have probably had enough football talent walking our halls for the past four or five seasons to have fielded an extremely competitive football program. Perhaps that talent, along with incoming talent, will equate to a championship caliber football program in the future. We can only hope so. Since the decision has been made to go ahead with the establishment of a football program and because I am a Brossart guy, I will support it and hope that it will make an already great high school an even better place.

 

I don't think a right or wrong answer exists at the present time. I do hope that in ten years when we look back that we will all agree that football was one of the best decisions that was ever made.

Many of our strongest, staunchest, Brossart supporters are NCC grads who have sent their kids to Brossart.

Football had nothing to do with their decision on attending Campbell County instead of Brossart.

What if the Diocese closes NCC and sells off the property to developers of million dollar condos and reinvests the money in a new HS in the Cold Spring area. "Bob Schnieder High" could serve/recruit all of Campbell County.......just a thought!

I know for a fact that it had nothing to do with Brossart not having a football program at the time. The kids just wanted to attend Campbell County.

I have to say, that Mustangs post was good, but I never really considered BB as fielding "championship caliber" teams. Not saying they don't. Just that I never thought of Brossart as a perenial powerhouse in all sports other than football. But that's just me. I know they have grown, but they've always been a small school. I never thought of them as being the hotbed of all athletics other than football. Once again, not saying there not, just my perception. I think if I have to look at the whole picture of small schools who field football teams. Most of which don't have soccer programs or if they do, they are not as successfull as they probably would be without a football team. I would speculate that that is why St. Henry doesn't have a football team. The Soccer coach from what I've heard even went so far to say "Not over my dead body."

I can understand that. I'm not saying it's the right or wrong choice, but I'm sure that the soccer team will suffer. How many boys soccer state titles have the Mustangs won? Semi final appearances? Regional final appearances? Just wondering. I don't know much about the kick ball stats, so this is an honest question, not a snipe. I thi9nk with cooperation, that BBall will not be impacted. But soccer I'm afraid to say, in a single A school, will be.

This has been true since the old Campbell County Youth Football league of the 70’s & 80’s. That old league had teams from St. Joe’s, St. Therese, St. Thomas, St. Anthony, and St. Francis. There were not any teams from the southern part of the county because they didn’t have any interest, the Southern schools (St. Mary, St. Phillip, Sts. Peter & Paul, St. Joe Camp Springs) were offered to combine players for one team and they still didn’t have enough to field a team. Even today the Campbell County Red Devils, which is the only Youth football program in the Southern part of the county, gets the majority of the kids from the Cold Spring, Highland Heights, Southgate area. Being very familiar with both NCC & Brossart I do not see this benefiting Brossart, but I think it will hurt NCC some in the long run. Although I hope that it may start a debate about merging both schools, which I think would benefit the whole county.

leo, I haven't had enough time to think about your theory regarding north and south, but I do know that St. Thomas has never had a team in the Campbell County Youth Football League, well at least not during the 70's or 80's. I went grade school at St. Thomas in the late 60's and early 70's and there was no youth football team at St. Thomas nor has there been since then to the best of my knowledge. You may be right about the other schools though.

I know that this past season the boys soccer team at Brossart won the All A, and if I'm not mistaken, may have been ranked in the top 5 in the state toward the end of the year, but I'm not sure what round of the tournament they were knocked out.

How right you are. Sorry Mustang if you took my comments as a snipe of some kind. I'm a football guy. I could care less about BBall, Soccer, Track, Cross Country, or Baseball. I don't try to hide it or pretend otherwise. I was deffinetly just looking for info. As far as all those sports go, only one would be impacted dramatically by football IMO. Soccer, and judging by your response, they are not one of the "championship caliber" sports at BB. So I think BB will be ok.
