There is always going to be one. The point is anyone who isn't a homer thought this would be just the kind of game it was. Holmes was not overlooked or disrespected.

Bolden's step-back is the quickest that I've ever seen. He's back and up before you can react to get anywhere near his shot.

 

The way he does that and then elevates under control is impressive. Bosley played the best defense on Bolden that I have seen ... and Bolden still got 29. That behind the back, spin and step back 3 was just ridiculous.

 

Is there a better guard tandem in the state than Hawkins and Bosley? I would sure like to see it if there is.

Congrats to Madison Central. Great game Bulldogs, just couldn't hit the free-throws at the end. Chames misses 2 and Bolden misses front end of one & one late in the 4th. Couple on the line/ out of bounds errors & passes also. What I cannot stand personally, the fact that Hawkins got every call imagineable. My daughter was 17...a person can fail once or get held back at a young age. Plus his birthday could be one of those who was born in Nov. Who cares, I read a thread where someone was 22 and married.

You are letting your disappointment shade your opinions. Holmes had a great run and they got beat by an excellent team.

 

Agree. It's as simple as that. One excellent team beat another excellent team. It would have been interesting to see what the outcome would have been had Beetle shot a trey in the closing moments of regulation instead of the refs calling a foul on the breakout. In the big scheme, turnovers doomed Holmes.

Just spoke with a friend from college whose attended 2 state tournaments for their entirety and watched plenty of the other big games through the years (usually the championship games, etc.). He told me that he thought that this was the best high school game he'd ever seen. He was raving about what a show Bolden and Hawkins (despite his cold start) had both put on. He also mentioned how Bosley did as good of a job as anyone possibly could have against Bolden, and thought that was one of the biggest keys to victory for Central.

As much as I want to complain about the late calls/no calls, I won't. Bottom line is this...8/13 from the charity stripe in the second half simply won't get it done in a big game like this. Make ft's and we are talking about Holmes playing tomorrow night in the state semi finals.

 

Great show by Hawkins and Bolden, but when matched up one on one, Hawkins had nothing for Bolden. Bolden cross over was too quick and Hawkins couldn't keep up...why do you think Bosley was switched to him? Hawkins got in early foul trouble trying to defend him. Hawkins is stronger but Bolden is the better all around basketball player.

 

With that said, Hawkins is one hell of a player. Not much of an outside threat, but if he wants to get to the rim, his strength and athleticism makes him so tough to stop. As my man Jon Rothstein would say.... "So much Arrez Henderson in Dom Hawkins."

 

Hawkins finished 12-32 from the field (10-27 and 2-5) for 31 points.

Bolden finished 14=29 from the field (9-20 and 5-9) for 29 points.

 

When was the last time there was a game in the state tournament that saw TWO performances like that?!

 

Cal was impressed enough with Bolden to let both him and Coach Booher know after the game how impressed he was with the young guy and that he would be in touch very soon.

 

Disappointed Holmes lost but they had one hell of a season...something to think about this season:

 

3 losses

Double OT loss to Newcath 88-85

Overtime loss to Mad Cen 65-61

Half Court shot at the buzzer loss to Covcath 73-72.

 

Coach Booher brought that up in the post game interviews.

Yes, I know it's possible that he will be able to play, I was just trying to see if anyone knew for sure. He's going to be fun to watch over the next two years.

Can anybody cite the rule that allows an official to wave off a free throw for something OTHER than a violation by the opposing team? I have never seen that done before, and obviously there are a whole bunch of opposing fans that are doing everything they can to distract the shooter. Difference being obviously Bolden's got the 30 footer to tie it if they don't give the kid a third free throw. I didn't care for the way the game was called the fourth quarter and in overtime, but those are discretionary calls. I would like to know under what conditions an official can award another free throw...
