I think the reason so many of the guys I polled picked Chuck Smith is WHERE he did it. I have met Mueller and Beatty as have most of the guys I talked too and they are tremendous, maybe even the correct answer to this questions. However they have not and will never get a chance to win a Championship at a county school. Most coaches have a great deal of respect for that, its not detracting from the other greats. Fans of Trinity and Highlands are so blessed to be where they are, some things are taken for granted, some will never know or understand what the environment is like at a county school with no tradition.

Dudley Hilton, He did more with less than anyone around. To me that is a sign of a good coach.

I think another thing to consider when looking at this is how many times has the coach in question has been knocked out of the playoffs by the team that did not win state?

That would be four times they were defeated by the State Champ. Of those times '94 Danville was clearly better, '96 Breathitt only won 12-7 at Breathitt, '97 Bourbon beat the Rebels after Boyle had defeated them earlier in the season, '04 HHS chalked up their 2nd win that season over Boyle.

 

So that is 6 Finals Appearances, 5 State Titles, and 4 times losing to eventual State Champion in the playoffs.

I believe that Boyle/Bourbon game was a mud bowl, but I could be wrong. Bourbon won 24-0, the first of three consecutive shutouts. They would shutout Lexington Catholic in the next round 20-0, and then shutout Lawrence County in the state semifinals 14-0. So...they were pretty good.

Dudley was a very good high school coach.

Chuck, Mueller, and I'm going to get a meltdown with some people, but he may have a porsche, but he don't wreck it and that is Bob Beatty. There have been many Trinity coaches, but this guy is has won a (Mythical) Nat. Championship and about 10 state titles. He has only been a head coach in KY since 1999. Pretty good in my book.

The stars aligned that year for Bourbon, but it takes a little luck along the way for anybody.

 

I think Bourbon actually finished 4th in the district that year didn't they? Danville and Boyle both layed the wood to them in the regular season.

 

It was a mud bowl the night they beat Boyle in the 2nd round.

You have to put Jack Morris from Mayfield as one of the very top coach's.
