Ahh, that must be what I was thinking.

 

As far as the Yeagle discussion is concerned...Mike came into not-so-storied program and made them THE top tier program in their class while he was coaching. Can same be said of the others in this discussion? Smith and Jaggers certainly did great work on making great programs out of not-so-great programs, but do they have the longevity at a single program going against them? Mueller, Beatty, and Harp have done great things at their programs, but they took over programs that were already very good (to say the least) when they got there.

Like BigZig I think you have add Mike Yeagle to the discussion. How many titles was it in how many years?

 

He would be at the top of my list.

 

What some people may forget is the fact that when Mike took over Beechwood only had 1 state title and that was some 6 years before he took over, so he wasn't inheriting a State Championship roster.

Chuck, Mueller, and I'm going to get a meltdown with some people, but he may have a porsche, but he don't wreck it and that is Bob Beatty. There have been many Trinity coaches, but this guy is has won a (Mythical) Nat. Championship and about 10 state titles. He has only been a head coach in KY since 1999. Pretty good in my book.

It probably speaks more to the dislike of Dale Mueller that is prevelant with many opposing coaches than the superior coaching abilities of Chuck Smith. Smith did great things at Boyle and I'm sure he's a great coach but what Mueller has done with taking Highlands to another level is pretty remarkable. Like him or not Dale Mueller has accomplished way more in the high school ranks than Chuck Smith.

However Chuck Smith only coached from the late 80's to '04. He was at Boyle from '92 to '04. 9 seasons. He took a program that was 5-5, 3-8, 4-7, 7-3, 4-7, 2-8, 1-9, 3-8, and 1-9 in the 9 seasons prior to his arrival; and immediately went 7-4, 2-8, 9-4, 10-3, 11-3, and 11-1 in the next 6 seasons. (While playing in arguably "one of" the toughest districts in the state that included Danville and Lex Cath as well.)

 

The apex was of course '99 to '04 when the Rebels went to 6 Straight Title games and won 5 straight. (15-0, 15-0, 15-0, 13-2, 15-0, and 13-2)

 

Mueller has taken HHS and KY football to new heights, without question. However to compare Apples to Apples you have to see that Mueller has had more years to accomplish more than Smith did. I'm not sure that Mueller arrived in '95 or not but let's use that as the benchmark and look at his first 13 seasons and compare them to Smith's first 13.
