If you mean head coaches, then no. Even a Div. 3 head coach makes more than a high school head coach. Now, like I said, mueller would be taking a pay cut, I've heard he makes somewhere around 100k at highlands. Now that's a joke. Anyone with any football sense could step in there and win state titles at half that cost in that program.

 

I find it hard to believe that the Fort Thomas school district is paying Dale Mueller around $100k. As a former teacher and a teacher's association negotiator in a school district in Ohio, where the salaries are usually higher than in Kentucky, even the head coach at the school where I worked, which has one of top programs in Ohio public schools, did not make that kind of money from the school district. Notice I highlighted parts because income from outside sources such as speaking, consulting, etc. could be extra. Further checking the Fort Thomas Independent Schools website for the salary schedule, and calculating the highest possible values for Coach Mueller, you will find it at least $17500 below the $100k value. Coaches do not make as much money as many of us think. High school coaching with the salary and long hours (most of the summer, afternoons, evenings, Saturdays, weight room times during the off season, etc) is really a labor of love for the game as well as the students.

I disagree with somewhat on this. Beechwood had the talent back in the 80's and 90's but Mike took them to a new level. You can disagree with me on this but I don't think we would won all of the State all those years if Bernie was the coach back in the 90's. I'm not taking anything away from Bernie at all he is legend as a coach but Mike Yeagle took us to a new level that Beechwood and many other teams hadn't ever seen before. I personally believe that had Mike been the Head Coach back in the late 80's and 1990 Beechwood would have more State Titles than what they do now. You can agree or disagree but that is my honest opinion.

Bring Yeagle or Mueller to a small school in WKY where the school has 1 coach in the building and the rest are parapros and see if they can get things done. If they can then yes they are the greatest. I couldn't imagine 5 coaches in the building or the availablility of a coach right after school and not have to wait for them to get off work at 5:30pm.

Like I have said before, NKY is the best football in KY. Why? I think their geographic area being close to Ohio, a REAL football state helps them. Being close or counted (Greater Cincinnati area) is a huge plus. $$$$$$.

First off ... there are not 25 coaches (probably close to that for the entire program--middle school, freshman, reserve/varsity--there are 8) and all of the coaches support the varsity program on Friday night.

*After School practice: Yes (However--during the off season--weights do not start until 4:30 pm--1. So more coaches will be there. 2. So the team can participate in Track or other sports right after school (I don't know of many who are doing that)

*Fundraising: Yes (The boosters naturally pitch in as well)

*No Clue what the budget is ... I do know that many of our coaches work for free (meaning--they are not even paraprofessionals--they are volunteers). I also know that the money that we do have usually goes towards the best possible equipment for the team. Our players pay for their uniforms (every year) and just about every other thing that they need.

 

So .. is it horrible? Depends on your perspective (we have great facilities now--but until 2 years ago ... our weight room made Highlands situation look like a billion dollar facility.

 

At the same time ... the situation that you speak about ... is not that much different. We are a little further down the road--and are fortunate that we are in a great community (which at the same time brings a different set of issues for our program that you would be happy never to have to deal with).

 

The point of my comments: at the end of the day--everyone can find fault or issues with the program that they support. To our head coach--it was important to have the best possible coaches ... even if they were not in school with him. If that means that our practice times change ... he lives with it. If we have to start weights at 4:30 pm ... then he lives with it. To him ... the trade off are worth it.

There's no doubt that some schools face challenges others do not. That does not mean that the top coaches would not be successful in those schools. The top names mentioned have not just been caretakers of successful programs. Many of them have led their programs to heights never before achieved. They've changed the focus and shape of their programs. I believe they would be successful in any school in the state.

No offense hoss ... but it is significantly harder to keep a successful program at the highest level for an extended period of time ... as opposed to having minimal expectations and over delivering.

 

I love the attitude that historically successful programs have it so much easier than other teams.

It really is kind of clueless ....

We have lost in the semi-finals the past 4 seasons ... (most teams would pay for that type of success) ... and people can't wrap their mind around that ...

 

Do we work harder than everyone else? I would say that we work significantly harder than the overwhelming majority.

We certainly don't twiddle our thumbs everyday.
