January 9, 201313 yr This is why I no longer watch baseball. If Barry Bonds isn't a first ballot Hall of Famer then the game is sham. Bonds hit 317 HR's after turning 35. At age 34 he was on the typical end of career decline path with HR's going down and he batted .262. His best year was 46 HR at age 28, an age when most hitters peak. He only hit more than 40 two other times. In the 5 seasons from 35-39 Bonds averaged just under 52 HR's per season. If Bonds had not done steroids he probably would have hit around 550 HR's, perhaps 600. Yes, that is a Hall of Famer but when you say he hit 200 HR's fraudulently, that is a serious blight on the game.

January 9, 201313 yr Like many folks, it took me a little while to realize what was happening. I had an epiphany at the end of 1996 when I realized that BRADY freaking ANDERSON hit FIFTY home runs. That was a wake-up call.

So really whats the point, baseball let the steroid era happen because it needed to get its fans back, deal with it.

While I'm sure I'm mistaken, here's my baseball writer stereotype. A measly 135lb 40-50something who couldn't make their respective Babe Ruth squads as ground balls would roll up their arms and leave stitch marks on their chins. So, they kept the scorebook and the rest is history. Some pent up animosity makes their votes seem to compensate for their shortcomings physically when it came to the game they couldn't compete in. Yep, my own little stereotype.

Your 1st ballot guys are your Ruth, Mantle, Mays, etc. type guys. Or as I like to put it, guys worthy of nomination to be on the Mount Rushmore of baseball. Then, there is everyone else that makes the Hall. After that, remove them from the list. But if picking between what they have now and only 1 shot at it, then I would go with your line of thinking.
